Chapter 5
Chapter 5
For the past few nights, Yang Jisheng and I had been sharing the same bed.
The problem was, his eyes were so bright and intent that even in the dimness, his presence was impossible to ignore. Being stared at like that made my skin crawl.
“What are you looking at?”
“You. You’re pretty.”
I was rendered speechless by that one.
Maybe he found my reaction amusing. His lips pressed together, his brows lowered slightly, and his thin eyelids curved with a hint of a smile. Yet one hand rested intimately at my waist, so warm it made my heart flutter in panic.
After a long while, I said quietly, “If you wanted to divorce me, there had to be a specific reason, right?”
“Mm.”
“Then why won’t you tell me?”
He said nothing.
Those eyes of his had always been impossible to read.
But at that moment, I realized I was being drawn in by those sorrowful eyes, the way I couldn’t stop myself from worrying.
“From this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, this man and woman will support and cherish each other until death do them part.”
I repeated softly, “Do you still remember the vows we made at our wedding?”
In the darkness, his lips moved. “I remember.”
“I’m just afraid you’ll regret it.”
“I won’t.”
I leaned in and kissed those tightly pressed lips.
It was only a comforting kiss, gone as soon as it touched.
Lately, Yang Jisheng seemed to have stopped being busy.
Every day, he would come to my office to pick me up after work, and then we would go to a restaurant for Cantonese food together. After several days in a row, it suddenly occurred to me that something seemed to be missing from our home.
“Huh? Why haven’t I seen Aunt Chen these past couple of days?”
Aunt Chen was the housekeeper we had hired when we first got married. She was from the Sichuan-Chongqing region, efficient with housework and an excellent cook.
At that, Yang Jisheng replied evenly, “I fired her a few days ago.”
“Why?”
“Too expensive.”
Before I could make sense of that, he went into the kitchen himself and fried a few eggs. He even brought me a cup of warmed milk. At first glance, he looked pretty convincing.
But as soon as he came close, his body suddenly swayed.
I hurriedly grabbed hold of him. “Are you okay?”
“…I’m fine. I have low blood sugar.”
He waved it off and sat down at the table to eat as usual.
Looking at his slightly pale face, a terrifying suspicion suddenly surfaced in my mind.
Absurd, but reasonable.
After breakfast, he stood by the entryway tying his tie and called over from a distance, “Zhong Wanying, are you going to work today? Want me to drive you?”
Seeing that my back was to him and I wasn’t answering, he came over and turned me by the shoulders. “Zhong Wanying?”
What answered him was my tear-streaked gaze and my choked voice.
“…I don’t want… to be a widow…”
Yang Jisheng: “?”
