Chapter 6
Chapter 6
I woke up in the hospital, my fever having subsided slightly.
Opening my eyes, I saw a white ceiling, an IV drip, and Shi Wan.
Seeing me wake up, her brow smoothed out a little, and she poured a glass of water for me.
The stinging pain in my throat finally eased.
“Ah Yu, your fever was so severe this time.”
Her expression was a bit strange, though her voice remained soft. “When I came back, I saw you weren’t in bed. How did you suddenly fall off?”
I didn’t say anything.
Her gaze fell on the hand where I was receiving the injection, and she spoke softly again.
“Ah Yu… your hand…”
“Why is it covered in scars?”
I lowered my eyes.
Crisscrossing scars occupied my arm like ugly insects.
Avoiding the topic, I asked her instead, “Where did you go?”
I had clearly heard her say she would stay home to take care of me.
She was silent for a moment. “Something suddenly came up at the company.”
Liar.
I actually heard it.
On the first night of Chu Kuo’s return, he had acted spoiled to make her accompany him to the amusement park.
The date they set was today.
“Call Chu Kuo.”
Shi Wan froze.
I stared at her fixedly, but she didn’t move.
I brought it up for the second time: “Let’s break up.”
“No.”
She refused without the slightest hesitation.
She grabbed my other hand-the one without the IV-and held it very tightly.
“Ah Yu, we aren’t breaking up.”
“Then what about Chu Kuo?”
My expression was calm.
“He’s getting married.”
Shi Wan’s voice was somewhat strained.
“His father arranged a blind date for him. They’re a good match, and the wedding date has been set.”
“He only came back to visit this time. He’s leaving today to go back and get married.”
Shi Wan’s face was like a sea shrouded in shadows, making it impossible for me to see clearly.
Yet, I could distinctly glimpse a faint flush at the corners of her eyes.
I had the intuition that I was playing a rather unsightly role in this story.
Like the villainous male supporting character standing between true lovers.
I knew I should be angry.
But looking at Shi Wan’s face, all my temper vanished instantly.
I sighed.
I didn’t mention it again.
After that day, Chu Kuo seemed to truly disappear from my life.
That locked room was sealed away again, as if no one had ever opened it.
It was as if Shi Wan and I had returned to the way we were before.
But locking a door doesn’t mean it’s forgotten forever.
One day, the matching key would still open that door.
I ran into Chu Kuo while I was away on a business trip.
I knew he didn’t really think much of me; as long as he was there, he would always be Shi Wan’s top priority.
Therefore, he didn’t even need to look me in the eye to make me fall apart.
He suddenly appeared while I was dining at the hotel and sat down opposite me without any ceremony.
I was a bit taken aback. “What a coincidence.”
Chu Kuo curled his lips.
“It’s not a coincidence. I found out your itinerary from Wanwan and came here specifically to find you.”
His gaze landed on my face, appearing somewhat detached. “At first glance, we really do look quite alike.”
I knew he was talking about the resemblance between him and me, so I didn’t respond.
Chu Kuo didn’t mind my silence as he met my eyes.
“Do you love Shi Wan?”
I remained silent.
He chuckled.
“I had a grudge in my heart. I couldn’t let go and I couldn’t give her up, so I thought about us tormenting each other.”
“Shi Wan didn’t see anyone else after she broke up with me.”
“I was a bit surprised when I heard she was with you.”
“Later, they showed me your photo.”
Chu Kuo’s eyes shimmered, and the expression on his face was one of delight.
“Rather than her finding a substitute-”
“What makes me even happier is that she can never let go of me.”
He smiled with an air of arrogant pride, and the gaze he leveled at me carried the haughtiness of someone who knew they were the favorite.
“So, I’ve decided not to let go.”
“Shen Yu.”
“I’m going to take her back.”
