Chapter 1

It was the middle of the night. I had just hung up on the doctor when the doorbell rang in the living room.

I closed my suitcase and turned to answer the door.

The man wore a leather jacket with a cold, expensive sheen. The moment I opened the door, he tossed a heavy sports car key into my arms and said unhappily, “Why did you change the front door passcode?”

I pressed my lips together and said quietly, “I was afraid some stalker fan might camp outside my place.”

He let out a disdainful scoff. “With the security in this neighborhood? If they’re not registered, even a cat couldn’t get in, let alone a living, breathing person.”

…They could, actually.

I thought silently, for example, your white moonlight came by and even kicked my door in.

I took his coat and stood on tiptoe to hang it up.

Aside from the familiar scent of fir, there was also a trace of sweet women’s perfume.

It was exactly the same as the scent on yesterday’s uninvited guest.

I pretended not to notice.

He suddenly reached out and brushed his knuckles against my eyes. “Were you crying?”

I froze for a moment, not expecting him to notice my slightly swollen eyes.

I made up a casual lie. “I watched a movie.”

As I lowered my long lashes, his gaze followed and landed on my bare feet.

The chill of autumn was growing stronger, but the rug still hadn’t been laid out.

He frowned slightly, then scooped me up, supporting me under the hips as he carried me toward the sofa.

He probably thought I had been swayed by the recent rumors.

So he said,

“People in our circle love to gossip. If getting pregnant were enough to marry into a wealthy family, all those women waiting for their chance would have already thrown themselves at me.”

“I have other uses for this child. Be good, and don’t learn from those idiots who dream of climbing the social ladder. The position of the Lu Family’s madam isn’t that simple.”

Those words were both a reminder and a warning.

He had had plenty of women by his side over the years, but fooling around was one thing. When it came to matters involving family interests, he was never careless.

The moment I dared to be like the other women in the circle and try to use a child to fight for something,

he could take everything back at any time and send me back to where I had started.

I was a little tired, so I leaned against his shoulder and gave a very soft “Mm.”

Suddenly, his gaze paused. He noticed the suitcase lying open on the floor.

“Going back to your hometown again?” His brows furrowed almost imperceptibly.

“Mm. My parents said they missed me.”

Over the years, whenever I felt wronged, I ran home.

One moment I would say I never wanted to come back again, and the next, because I missed him too much, I would secretly buy the earliest flight back.

Thinking that the Mid-Autumn Festival was coming up soon, he didn’t pay it much mind. “Then stay a few extra days once you’re back. Don’t spend too much time with people with crooked intentions. We’ll talk about the child later.”

He didn’t mention the white moonlight who had returned to the country.

And I was sensible enough not to ask.
