Chapter 4
The measured click of dress shoes crossed the marble floor, drawing steadily closer behind me.
A tall shadow fell over me.
My head swam and my heart clenched. I did not dare turn around.
Why did he have to arrive at this exact moment?
This was bad. Chen Lichuan looked unusually handsome today. Gu Yunzhou might lose. Was Zhou Feifei already preparing to laugh at me?
Fine. A loss was a loss. Gu Yunzhou was at least interesting. Comparing their faces was meaningless anyway, nothing more than my own vanity, and he should not have to bear the consequences.
I repeated this to myself, but my body refused to listen. I stood rigid, too frightened to turn.
Instead, I studied Zhou Feifei’s face, hoping to judge Gu Yunzhou’s looks from her reaction.
After two glances, I was even more confused. What kind of expression was that?
She and Chen Lichuan looked like idiots, eyes wide and mouths hanging open.
Chen Lichuan, who had been standing casually, now snapped upright with both hands stiff at his sides. His chin tucked in, he looked even more nervous than I did when a professor caught me skipping class.
Could Gu Yunzhou be one of our old teachers? Professor Chen, perhaps?
While dread crawled over me, Gu Yunzhou tapped my shoulder.
“Shen Bailu? Little Deer?”
I turned stiffly. Before I could see him clearly, a figure shot forward and shoved me aside.
Zhou Feifei’s shrill, excited voice stabbed through my eardrums.
“M-Mr. Gu! Oh my God, it really is you! You’re even more handsome than in the magazines! You know our Shen Bailu?”
Gu Yunzhou raised an eyebrow. “And you are?”
“We’re classmates from Capital University. We’re having a reunion here tonight.”
“Capital University? I thought it was Harv—”
“Ahem! Mr. Gu, I need to speak with you.”
Sweat broke across my forehead. I grabbed Gu Yunzhou and dragged him to a corner beside the elevators, then looked around warily.
At my furtive behavior, the corners of his eyes lifted with amusement.
“Little Deer, this is your class reunion? Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
I released him and stared at the man before me with complicated feelings.
He stood around six foot three, broad-shouldered and long-legged. His black suit was worn without a tie, and two buttons of his white shirt hung casually open, giving him a rakish air. He was devastatingly handsome—far more striking in person than on video.
Emotion roiled inside me as I circled him once.
“Wait, you’re actually Gu Yunzhou? The crown prince of Beijing’s elite dates online? You’re surprisingly down-to-earth.”
He looked utterly baffled.
“Who else would I be? We’ve been on video for this long. You didn’t know I was Gu Yunzhou? As for you…”
He stepped back, narrowed his eyes, and looked me up and down.
“Five foot eight?”
“Heh. Off by just a little. I’m five foot six.”
“Thick, seaweed-like waves down to your waist?”
I touched my naturally straight, barely shoulder-length hair. “I just cut it.”
“Nancheng’s answer to Liu Yifei?”
I lifted my face. “Don’t you think our nostrils have a similar shape?”
His gaze swept upward once more and finally stopped at my chest.
“D cup?”
I gave him my solemn guarantee.
“That one’s true! Well, almost. If I gain another twenty pounds, it definitely will be.”
Gu Yunzhou fell silent.
