Chapter 4

When the household servants heard that Madam had changed, none of them believed it.

They did not change their minds until they strolled lazily to their posts and found Madam standing there with the Young Miss in her arms.

The Fu family paid several times the industry standard. The work was easy, the money was excellent, and their employer had always been a pushover. No one wanted to lose such a job.

Smiles sprang onto every face as they hurried to flatter Madam.

All except one.

“Madam, it is time for the Young Miss to return to the attic.”

Madam’s expression chilled.

The woman was Nanny Huang.

Fu Huangcheng had also grown up starved of maternal affection, and Nanny Huang had more or less raised him. Madam had therefore treated her with respect in the past.

But after the CEO placed the Young Miss in her care, Nanny Huang increasingly fancied herself half the mistress of the house. She insisted on interfering in everything.

“Madam, the Young Miss is unruly. A few bumps and bruises are inevitable.”

At the sight of Nanny Huang, the girl burrowed into her mother’s arms. Her small fingers clutched Madam’s clothes so tightly that her knuckles turned white.

“The Young Master entrusted his daughter to me,” Nanny Huang continued. “What could you possibly have to worry about?”

“Nanny Huang.”

Madam’s eyes were glacial, but she smiled.

“I have asked a doctor to examine the Young Miss. Why don’t you stay and hear the results?”

Nanny Huang’s expression changed. “No one knows her health better than I do.”

“I said she should go back to the attic.”

“Those are the Young Master’s orders.”

Madam nodded, shoved her daughter into my arms, and slapped Nanny Huang twice.

The sharp cracks rang through the silent courtyard like a mirror shattering.

Every shard reflected a stunned face.

“Madam hit someone?”

“Is that really our Madam?”

“She hit Nanny Huang?”

Madam ignored them. While Nanny Huang stood dazed, she knocked the older woman down, straddled her waist, and slapped her again and again.

By the time Nanny Huang tried to fight back, the quick-witted servants had already pinned down her arms and legs.

Madam dug her fingers into every tender spot she could find. She struck and sobbed, tears and fists flying together.

“Is this how you hit my daughter? Is this how you pinched her?”

“She is so little! How could you be so cruel?”

Nanny Huang’s speech had become slurred, but she kept arguing.

“It’s because you’re useless! You couldn’t keep your man’s heart!”

“And all you gave him was a worthless daughter. The Young Master hates her too. You should thank me for not killing her and for raising her this long—”

Nanny Huang could say no more.

Madam had knocked out three of her front teeth with one punch.

I stroked the Young Miss’s hair. She had watched the entire fight without blinking.

“Did you see that, Young Miss?”

“The best defense is a good offense.”

She nodded as if she almost understood, then raised her thumb.

“Mommy.”

“Amazing.”
