Chapter 3

When I woke, Zhou Hui was gone.

Someone had tampered with the phone beside the bed. He had deleted Shen Jin’s and Lu Xuyan’s contact details.

Only his own remained, labeled “Baby.”

I left the key behind and smiled.

Jealousy was not an attractive quality.

After my annual leave ended, I returned to a mountain of unfinished work.

I was drowning in it when Ms. Wang from the neighboring office knocked on my door.

“Chu Yin, could you receive a client for me this afternoon? Something urgent came up.”

Because of my face blindness, I rarely handled visiting clients. Still, I thought I could manage it once in a while.

I agreed without much thought, never expecting the visitor to be Shen Jin.

The place behind his ear where I had bitten him was still red. His hair was combed flawlessly, but he looked inexplicably exhausted.

“Mr. Shen, is there anywhere else you would like me to show you?”

Shen Jin stared at me before coming back to himself. “Let’s sit in your office.”

The others followed an administrator to the company cafeteria, leaving the two of us alone.

I poured him a glass of water. “What a coincidence. I didn’t expect it to be you. Does Xuyan know you’re here?”

Shen Jin rubbed a thumb along the rim of the glass. “No. Does it matter?”

“I suppose not. Xuyan doesn’t like hearing about work.”

At the sound of Lu Xuyan’s name, Shen Jin rose and interrupted me.

“What happened to your ear?”

Oh, Zhou Hui had probably bitten it. I disliked having marks left on my body.

I would have to teach him that slowly in the future.

Touching my earlobe, I lifted my gaze to Shen Jin.

“Why is Mr. Shen so concerned about another man’s girlfriend?”

Before the birthday, I had clung to him at every opportunity. Today, I was suddenly calling myself “another man’s girlfriend.”

Shen Jin rotated the glass between his hands, steam curling three times around his palm.

Through clenched teeth, he asked, “Am I not allowed to be?”

Without changing expression, I pushed my phone toward him. “Of course you are. Tell Xuyan yourself.”

The word “Baby” flashed on the screen. Shen Jin’s eyelid twitched as he looked away.

“Chu Yin, do you have to do this?”

I did not understand. He was the one seducing me, yet somehow he made it sound as if I were corrupting an innocent man.

“If you refuse to tell him, are you planning to make me your secret lover, Mr. Shen?”

His eyelid trembled harder. He raised his head and looked directly at me.

“Why not?”

The first time I met Shen Jin, he had worn a suit to a nightclub, buttoned all the way to the collar.

His male secretary had stood properly beside him. He and Lu Xuyan could not have looked more different.

I could scarcely believe a man like him would say such a thing.

Shen Jin stepped closer and closed his lips over the teeth marks on my earlobe, his breath hurried and scorching.

His cuff link pressed painfully into my waist, yet his voice trembled like a frightened animal.

He repeated, “Why not, Chu Yin?”

I tipped my head back. “Because I said no.”

Shen Jin stopped dead. The heat against the side of my neck slowly receded.

“Why?”

I pushed him away and straightened the pen on my desk. “I hear Mr. Shen has a girlfriend. I can’t afford to offend anyone, so please don’t make things difficult for me.”

The woman in Lu Xuyan’s arms at last night’s birthday party had probably been Shen Jin’s girlfriend.

Shen Jin seemed to realize what I meant. He wet his lips. “No. I don’t have one.”

“You should leave, Mr. Shen. I won’t tell Xuyan what happened today.”

Shen Jin still wanted to say something, but I had already closed the door.

Men could be profoundly troublesome.

I had no idea that the true trouble was still to come.

Until one day, when I overheard him talking about me with his friends.
