Chapter 90
Chapter 90
After Song Xiaotian left, I drove Meng Yifan home before returning to my own rental apartment.
As I headed upstairs, I brought Li Xiumei’s ashes inside with me.
While it felt ominous and more than a little awkward, Li Xiumei was undeniably powerful. She had already helped us twice, and if not for her tonight, Meng Yifan and I would have been imprisoned in that Club.
Having her in the house actually made me feel a bit safer.
Once I was home, I was dying to know if Du Ruhai was dead. If he was, it would be a happy ending for everyone involved.
I placed Li Xiumei’s urn on the TV stand, bowed to it three times, and asked, “Sister Xiumei, are you back? Did you manage to kill Lv Zhengxian?”
After asking, I scanned the living room. I didn’t see anything unusual, and there was no response.
Had Li Xiumei not returned yet?
“Wishing you a victorious return…”
I went back to the bedroom, grabbed a change of clothes, and prepared to take a shower.
In the bathroom, I stripped down and turned on the water heater. The billowing steam quickly coated the mirror in a layer of mist.
I wiped a section of the mirror with my hand, intending to shave. But as the mist cleared, a dead face suddenly appeared in the reflection. Those pupil-less eyes were staring directly into mine.
My soul nearly left my body. I let out a panicked yelp and tumbled to the floor.
The dead face simply shook its head at me.
I nodded frantically in response. “I understand, Sister Xiumei. You didn’t get Lv Zhengxian this time. We’ll find another chance. I’m taking a shower now, so… could you step out for a moment?”
The dead face vanished shortly after.
It took me a long time to compose myself. Once I did, I gave myself a sharp slap across the face.
I’m such an idiot. Why the hell did I have to bring the ashes home?
However, it was clear that Li Xiumei was responding to me. Du Ruhai wasn’t dead; she hadn’t been able to get her revenge. Song Xiaotian’s intuition had been right-that man wasn’t going to die so easily.
I sighed. Our feud with Du Ruhai was only deepening. After the humiliation we put him through tonight, he likely wanted us dead more than ever.
After finishing my shower, I crawled into bed and fell asleep.
That night, I had a dream. I dreamt I was inside a house.
The layout was very similar to Du Yuwei’s hiding place, but I recognized instantly that it wasn’t the same location I had visited before.
Back then, I had gone looking for Du Yuwei with an urn, but the ashes inside hadn’t belonged to Du Mingyang; they belonged to a stranger. That man’s Ghost had known where Du Yuwei was hiding. I assumed Du Yuwei had moved again out of fear of being exposed.
In the dream, I was vaguely aware that I was dreaming, but I couldn’t tell if it was my own subconscious or if Du Yuwei had pulled me into this vision.
She was still sitting upright in a chair, dressed in a red bridal gown with her hands resting flat on her thighs. But this time, her head was covered by a red bridal veil, looking every bit like a bride waiting for her wedding.
Then, she suddenly moved.
Even though it was a dream, I was terrified. I remembered that she was just a corpse, and corpses aren’t supposed to move.
Yet move she did. Just like a living person, she stood up and walked toward me.
I froze in place, watching her approach. I had no idea what she wanted, and I was too paralyzed by fear to move.
She gave me an answer soon enough.
I never expected that this woman would lean directly into me. Her head, still covered by the red veil, rested against my chest, and her ice-cold hands quickly wrapped around my waist.
I was stunned.
What on earth was she trying to do…?
Could she be like that Motorcycle Influencer, feeling empty inside too…?
My heart raced, but I didn’t dare breathe too loudly, let alone move an inch.
Just then, the woman in my arms actually spoke.
“Thank you, Chen Mo. Thank you for being willing to help me.”
It was that same familiar voice, the one from when she first came knocking on the door looking for Li Xiumei.
But I froze.
Although it was still Du Yuwei’s voice, this time it had warmth, emotion, and even a hint of tenderness.
She was thanking me.
It was because I had helped her find her child…
I opened my mouth to respond, but for some reason, the words wouldn’t come out.
I struggled for a long time, but I still couldn’t speak. The sheer effort of trying eventually jolted me awake.
When I woke up, I wasn’t lying in some strange place; I was in my own bed in the rental apartment.
Sunlight streamed in, spilling across the bed, and I felt my head clear instantly.
I thought back to that dream-that dream… Had Du Yuwei pulled me into it?
I got up and washed up, preparing to head out to the real estate office.
Before leaving, I glanced at Li Xiumei’s funeral urn. It was still sitting on the TV stand.
Maybe it was because Li Xiumei was here that I couldn’t leave the house last night and was pulled directly into the dream instead.
After heading downstairs, I was about to drive to the office, but I got back out of the car right after getting in.
I went to the back seat and opened the compartment to check if Du Mingyang’s ashes were still there.
But when I opened it, I froze.
The ashes were gone!
Damn it!
Where are the ashes?
Where did they go?
I clearly remember putting them in here. Who stole them?
I rushed back to the driver’s seat, intending to call Meng Yifan, but just then, I caught sight of a slip of paper on the passenger seat out of the corner of my eye.
I grabbed it and took a quick look.
“Tonight at the Zi Hour, Tianxing Amusement Park. Come alone.”
I recognized the handwriting at a glance; it was Du Yuwei’s.
She left this. Does that mean she took the ashes too?
I realized quickly that she must have taken them. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have had that dream last night.
She had already been reunited with her child, which was why she thanked me.
But what did she mean by asking me to go to Tianxing Amusement Park tonight…?
Tianxing Amusement Park was the largest amusement park in the city. Fang Man and I had been there twice before.
I thought about it. Since she asked, I might as well go.
She had already thanked me in the dream, so she probably wasn’t planning to harm me.
However, the fact that she told me to come alone meant she didn’t want me telling anyone else or bringing anyone with me.
I drove off and soon arrived at the office.
Except, I went to the other branch.
The original branch had been closed, and everyone was now working out of this one.
In theory, merging the two branches should have meant a lot of people, but in reality, there weren’t many left because so many had resigned and moved on.
I stayed at the office all day, but no business came through the door. Things were beyond bleak.
At ten o’clock that night.
After finishing some drinks with Meng Yifan, I didn’t take my own car. Instead, I hailed a taxi and prepared to head to Tianxing Amusement Park.
