Chapter 68
Chapter 68
One second, Song Xiaotian was blaming Du Yuwei for indirectly causing Fang Man’s death.
The next, upon hearing that I wanted to go back up there, he suddenly lost his nerve.
“I think you make a lot of sense, but I haven’t had breakfast yet. Why don’t you two go up while I go grab a bite first?”
Meng Yifan and I immediately dragged him into the residential complex.
I wasn’t afraid as long as there were people with me; otherwise, I’d be terrified too.
“What are you doing? What are you guys doing? I need breakfast!”
“Do you have any idea how much damage skipping breakfast does to the body!”
Following my memory, I found the building from last night.
We looked up at the structure. This kind of old-fashioned apartment building was at least thirty years old, practically ready for the demolition list.
These old buildings looked eerie even in broad daylight.
I only just realized that the building was only seven stories high.
This made me even more certain that someone had intentionally hidden Du Yuwei here. There was definitely someone with her.
Song Xiaotian said, “How about I go eat breakfast and then come back to accompany you guys? Health is the most import-”
Before he could finish, Meng Yifan and I were already dragging him up the stairs.
The plaster was peeling off the hallway walls, and cobwebs were everywhere. The gloom inside the old building made it feel like a haunted house, even in the middle of the day.
Fortunately, there were three of us. We bolstered our courage and reached the seventh floor.
There were only two units on the seventh floor: Unit 7-1 and Unit 7-2. Last night, I had run into Unit 7-2.
“Actually, I think knocking now is pointless.”
Song Xiaotian turned serious. “There’s only a corpse inside. It’s not like the body can open the door for you, right? And if there is someone else inside, they’re even less likely to open up. We’d be better off investigating who the owner of this apartment is.”
“Someone wouldn’t buy a whole apartment just to hide Du Yuwei’s body, so this place is likely a rental.”
I thought about it and felt that Song Xiaotian had a point.
But since we were already here…
I said, “We’re already here, I might as well try knocking…”
With that, I walked to the door of Unit 7-2 and knocked a few times.
After knocking, I realized it was unlikely anyone would answer. I planned to knock on Unit 7-1 next to ask the neighbors for information.
But just as I finished knocking… the three of us suddenly heard footsteps coming from inside.
The footsteps moved very slowly, as if the person had difficulty walking.
I jumped, and Song Xiaotian and I stared at each other in shock.
Someone was actually coming to open the door!
A moment later, the sound of the door unlocking rang out.
The door slowly creaked open. The three of us were so startled that we scrambled back until we were pressed against the door of Unit 7-1.
Soon.
An Old Man opened the door and looked at us.
We didn’t know this Old Man, and he didn’t know us. He was eyeing the three of us with a look of confusion.
My eyes widened as I stared at him, and then past him at the interior of the apartment.
I was suddenly stunned.
Inside that apartment… it wasn’t at all like what I had seen last night.
The decor, the furniture, even the layout of the rooms was completely different from the night before.
Furthermore, there was an Old Woman sitting on the sofa watching television.
What was going on?
This was impossible!
I had only left this place at dawn. From then until our return, less than two hours had passed.
Even if they could empty the place and move Du Yuwei’s remains in two hours, there was no way they could have renovated the apartment and changed the entire floor plan!
“Who are you looking for?”
The Old Man looked at us and asked.
The three of us exchanged glances before I asked, “Excuse me… is Du Yuwei home? I’m looking for Du Yuwei…”
The Old Man seemed a bit hard of hearing. He shook his head and said, “There’s no one here by the name of Du. You must have the wrong place.”
With that, he shut the door in our faces.
Song Xiaotian and Meng Yifan looked at me with skepticism. “Did you get the address wrong?”
I was completely dazed. “I definitely didn’t get it wrong. I only left here two hours ago! How could I possibly be mistaken?”
Song Xiaotian thought for a moment, then suddenly bolted down the stairs.
As soon as he ran, Meng Yifan followed suit.
Seeing them both take off, I was too spooked to stay behind a second longer.
“Wait for me!”
We quickly scrambled out of the building.
Song Xiaotian was breaking out in a cold sweat. He frowned at me. “Are you sure you really came here last night? Are you sure you saw Du Yuwei? You weren’t sleepwalking, were you?”
Meng Yifan also began to doubt me. “We’ve both sleepwalked before…”
Hearing them, I suddenly started to doubt whether I had actually been here myself.
Because it made no sense at all.
Even if someone had moved Du Yuwei, the interior decoration, the furnishings, and the layout of the apartment-there was no way all of that could have been changed in just two hours.
But if I hadn’t come here, or if I had been sleepwalking, I was definitely awake when I ran out of the building earlier.
And on my way home, I had even bought a pack of cigarettes on credit at the convenience store downstairs from my place.
The shop owner couldn’t have been sleepwalking too, could he?
“Let’s get back to the car first…”
Song Xiaotian glanced at the building and pulled Meng Yifan and me back to the car.
Normally, he hated smoking in the car because he didn’t want the smell to linger.
But he was so scared that he needed a cigarette to calm his nerves.
The three of us sat in the car with cigarettes dangling from our mouths, trembling uncontrollably.
This was too damn eerie.
But even for something supernatural, it shouldn’t be this extreme!
Could this ghost… actually have the power to shift space?
If she were really that powerful, given Du Yuwei’s hatred for Du Ruhai, she would have torn him limb from limb long ago.
Just then, Song Xiaotian’s phone pinged a few times. He picked it up, took a look, and immediately turned the screen toward us. “Look at this. Is this the guy?”
Meng Yifan and I leaned in closer.
It was a photo, a still captured from surveillance footage.
It showed a street at night with two men standing on it.
I recognized them both at a single glance. One of them was the hit-and-run driver who had killed Fang Man!
And the other was wearing a black jacket, a mask, and a hat, holding a leather suitcase.
It was the primary suspect!
Since we didn’t know his identity yet, that was the only way we could refer to him.
“That’s him! That’s the man!”
I was so agitated that I accidentally knocked my cigarette ash onto the car floor. “He was dressed exactly like that when he met me outside the villa that night! This is the bastard who hired the killer!”
After I finished speaking, Song Xiaotian’s expression shifted again. “You really did see Du Yuwei last night… everything written in that diary was true…”
This photo proved that I hadn’t been sleepwalking.
Everything I saw last night was real.
Du Yuwei was helping us. She, and whoever was behind her, were all helping us.
