Chapter 63

Outside the elevator, seven or eight security guards lay on the floor, groaning in pain.

Song Xiaotian looked at them expressionlessly and pressed the button for the top floor.

The elevator quickly reached the penthouse of the building.

As soon as we stepped out, a dozen bodyguards in the hallway stared back at us with equally stony faces.

Du Ruhai’s personal security detail was clearly a cut above the rest.

Song Xiaotian remained unfazed. Gripping his short baton, he said calmly, “Call your boss out here, or let us in.”

The dozen bodyguards stood there like statues, their faces filled with contempt. They didn’t say a word.

“Playing the silent, brooding type, are we?”

Song Xiaotian started walking toward them, baton in hand.

Before long, Du Ruhai’s voice drifted out from the office doorway.

“Let them in.”

Hearing Du Ruhai’s command, the bodyguards finally stepped aside.

We entered the office, and the bodyguards followed, lining up in a row behind us.

It was my first time seeing such a magnificent office. I saw Du Ruhai, but I also saw a familiar face.

It was Old Zhao Seven, sitting right there with Du Ruhai.

To my surprise, Du Ruhai was personally pouring tea for him.

It was obvious that he was an honored guest here.

He was likely the “expert” working by Du Ruhai’s side.

“Weihai Group has been in Lanjiang City for many years, and you are the first group of people brave enough to cause trouble here-and the first to show such blatant disregard for me,”

Du Ruhai let out a sigh. “It seems I’ve grown old. People don’t take a man in his fifties seriously anymore.”

Song Xiaotian retracted his baton and said coldly, “My sister is dead. Her name was Fang Man, and she was Chen Mo’s girlfriend. She was killed in a car accident two days ago. The driver who hit her has terminal cancer and took a bribe.”

“I don’t know who we offended to the point where someone close to us had to lose their life, but after thinking it over, you’re the only one who comes to mind, Boss Du.”

“I’m curious, Boss Du-exactly how much did you pay that driver to get him to do something like that?”

As soon as Song Xiaotian finished speaking, Du Ruhai’s brow furrowed.

He looked genuinely shocked, and even a bit displeased.

“I can understand your feelings after such a tragedy,”

“But what I want to say is that you’ve found the wrong man. I don’t know any driver with cancer, and I never gave anyone money.”

That was Du Ruhai’s answer.

“Boss Du, we’re all smart people here. I think you know better than we do why we came to you first.”

Song Xiaotian pulled out a cigarette and lit it, then pulled Meng Yifan and me down to sit opposite Du Ruhai and Old Zhao Seven.

“You’re the only person we’ve dealt with lately, and my sister never offended anyone.”

“I can’t imagine who else would be bored enough to spend that much money to hire a dying man to kill a college student who just graduated.”

“Why don’t you explain that?”

Du Ruhai sat there calmly, then suddenly gave a helpless laugh. “I have nothing to explain because I didn’t do it. I don’t know how else to tell you.”

“I can only say that someone is intentionally framing me. They knew that if that young girl, Fang Man, died, you would immediately suspect me.”

“Song, you said it yourself-we’re all smart people. If that’s the case, give me one reason why I’d be bored enough to kill an innocent girl. What would I possibly gain?”
I knew what he meant.

Song Xiaotian had just threatened him, saying that if he dared to harm us or those close to us, Song Xiaotian would retaliate against his biological father, Lv Jun.

Therefore, he shouldn’t have dared to touch anyone around us.

“Then tell me, who is framing you?”

I suppressed my rage, my fists already clenched tight. “Someone who has a grudge against you, who also knows about the connection between you and us… and who knows that we would immediately suspect you after Fang Man was killed. Tell me, who is it!”

“Is it Li Xiumei!”

The mention of Li Xiumei’s name caused Du Ruhai’s expression to shift instantly.

He looked at us coldly. “You’ve already been quite offensive. Young people shouldn’t push their luck. Go find whoever killed that girl; don’t come looking for me. I don’t know who did it, and I’m under no obligation to explain anything to you.”

“If you think I did it, go call the police.”

The atmosphere suddenly became tense, like a bow drawn to its limit.

For a moment, I couldn’t read Du Ruhai’s reaction.

He acted completely innocent, as if we truly had wronged him.

Even I began to doubt whether he was really the one who had bribed the driver.

“Chen Mo, calm down for a moment.”

Beside us, Old Zhao Seven suddenly spoke up. “I’ve been with Boss Du these past few days. He’s been in a bad mood and hasn’t seen anyone, let alone some driver. I think there’s a misunderstanding…”

“Did I ask you?” I glared fiercely at Old Zhao Seven. “What does this have to do with you? Are we even close?”

Old Zhao Seven was stunned by my shout, his face flushing red as he found himself in an awkward position.

Du Ruhai was furious. “What is wrong with you people? It’s one thing to offend me, but Seventh Master is a man of his years. Don’t you have any manners?”

Old Zhao Seven raised a hand to stop Du Ruhai and looked at me coldly. “Chen Mo, we are all adults here. You need to know when you’ve lost and how to read the room. In all of Lanjiang City, how many people dare to oppose Weihai Group?”

“Boss Du didn’t hold it against you and gave you a pass. You should know when to back off.”

“Coming to Weihai Group to cause trouble-do you have a death wish?”

As soon as he finished, Meng Yifan stood up abruptly. “What right do you have to talk to us! You’re just a lackey for the capitalists!”

Song Xiaotian quickly pulled him back and stood up to face Du Ruhai. “Fine. We were out of line today. We were impulsive. I’m sorry, and we apologize. If you’re willing to overlook our intrusion today, we’ll leave right now.”

Du Ruhai’s face remained grim. After a long silence, he waved a hand. “Go. I won’t see you out.”

Song Xiaotian grabbed me and Meng Yifan, signaling for us to leave.

As we approached the door, one of the bodyguards looked at us with disdain.

Song Xiaotian turned to look at him and suddenly delivered a kick. “What the fuck are you looking at!”

The man was knocked unconscious on the spot.

Several bodyguards moved to attack us, but Du Ruhai barked an order to stop them.

“Enough! Let them go!”

Soon.

We were outside Weihai Group once again.

Looking up at this massive commercial empire, the three of us felt insignificant.

“We’ve seen him. What are your thoughts?” Song Xiaotian asked us.

Meng Yifan said, “He’s so punchable. And that Old Zhao Seven…”

Song Xiaotian sighed. “Right, asking you is a waste of time.”

I said, “I don’t know if his schemes run that deep or if he’s just a great actor, but I suddenly have this feeling… like this really had nothing to do with him.”
