Chapter 62

We saw the elderly couple to their car and had a colleague drive them home first.

Normally, I should have been the one to take them, but I had more important things to do.

The only way I could make it up to them was to kill the enemy with my own hands-to give them justice, and to give Fang Man justice.

The car window rolled down.

Fang Man’s father looked haggard. He gripped my hand and Song Xiaotian’s, reluctant to let go.

“Xiaotian, you young people… you have to take care of yourselves.”

“If anything happens, how are we parents supposed to bear it?”

Those words hit us right where it hurt, nearly bringing us to tears again.

We offered a few more words of comfort before watching the couple drive away.

Once everyone else was gone, only the three of us remained.

I pulled out my bank card and my car keys.

“There’s not much left in my account. When the time comes, help me sell the car. Give half the money to my parents and the other half to my in-laws.”

“I’m going to kill Du Ruhai tonight. I know where he lives.”

I wasn’t just venting. I knew why Fang Man was dead.

That son of a bitch Du Ruhai… he originally wanted to come after me, but Song Xiaotian had threatened him. He didn’t dare touch me, so he went after my girlfriend instead. He wanted to give me a warning, to make me shut up.

“I’m going with you. Consider it taking out the trash for society’s sake.”

Meng Yifan also pulled out his bank card and tried to hand it to Song Xiaotian. “If I don’t come back, or if I get caught, just give this to my parents.”

Song Xiaotian looked at us and slapped our cards away, his expression darkening. “What kind of madness is this?”

“I’m not going mad.”

I picked up my bank card, tears streaming down my face. “The three of us know exactly how Manman died. If it weren’t for me, she wouldn’t be dead at all. I was afraid of Du Ruhai, but I’m no coward. He killed my woman. If I don’t get revenge, I don’t deserve to be called a man.”

Song Xiaotian suddenly slapped me across the face. “How long have you known her? How long have I known her? Do you think I’m not hurting more than you!”

“You talk about revenge, but with what? Your damn mouth? Did your parents raise you just so you could go commit murder and rot in prison!”

“Do you have any idea how much time, planning, manpower, and resources it takes for front-line officers to take down someone like Du Ruhai? With just the two of you delivering yourselves to his doorstep, that old bastard wouldn’t even blink!”

With that, Song Xiaotian shoved Meng Yifan and me into the car and started driving, though I didn’t know where we were headed.

“I’m warning you, both of you better get a grip.”

“If you want revenge, fine. But Xiaoman and her parents would never want to see anything happen to you.”

“If you want revenge, listen to me. If you don’t, I’ll call the police right now and have you locked up for a while. That’s better than watching you go to your deaths!”

Meng Yifan and I finally calmed down. We apologized to Song Xiaotian and told him we wouldn’t go through with the killing yet, promising to follow his lead.

“I suspect Du Ruhai is behind this as well,”

Song Xiaotian said as he drove. “But there’s a problem. I already had someone look into it. The driver who hit her has terminal cancer; he has less than six months to live. The issue is that neither the police nor my contacts have found any large deposits in his accounts-or his family’s accounts, for that matter.”

It was already obvious. The driver had a terminal illness and had taken Du Ruhai’s money to run down Fang Man.

He was going to die anyway, so he took the chance to earn a sum of money for his family.

Yet, there were no large deposits in his or his family’s accounts.
“Could it have been a cash payment?” I asked.

Song Xiaotian nodded. “It was indeed cash. The police found two hundred thousand in cash at his house, but he’s refusing to admit the money was given to him by someone else. He claims he saved it himself and kept it at home because he doesn’t trust banks.”

Meng Yifan immediately frowned. “Cash has serial numbers. They can go to the bank to investigate when the money was withdrawn and by whom.”

Song Xiaotian sighed. “They checked. That money was withdrawn from a bank a year ago. There’s no telling how many times it has changed hands since then. Trying to trace the source of the cash is useless.”

“What I’m suspicious of is, if Du Ruhai hired a hitman, how could he only give them two hundred thousand?”

“A billionaire hiring a killer for only two hundred thousand?”

Hearing Song Xiaotian’s words, we also felt something was off.

But it was hard to say… Perhaps Du Ruhai had exactly that in mind, giving the driver only two hundred thousand to avoid suspicion. Moreover, for a man with a terminal illness, his life wasn’t worth much to begin with. Being able to earn two hundred thousand for his family made it quite reasonable for him to be bought off.

“Brother Tian, do you suspect that the person who hired the killer wasn’t Du Ruhai?”

“But if it wasn’t Du Ruhai, who would hire someone to harm Manman?”

Fang Man’s social circle consisted almost entirely of her colleagues at the store. It was impossible for her to have such a deep grudge with anyone.

“Of course I suspect Du Ruhai, but I’m not certain it’s really him.”

Song Xiaotian took a breath. “I need to figure out these inconsistencies first. Only then can I lock onto the real killer and avenge Xiaoman.”

I remarked that since the source of the money couldn’t be traced, the trail had gone cold, making it impossible to identify the true culprit.

Song Xiaotian said, “That’s why we’re going to see Du Ruhai now-to test him. But we absolutely cannot be impulsive. We especially can’t do anything against him right now because if he really is the killer, he’s definitely set a trap waiting for us to fall into.”

About half an hour later.

We arrived at Weihai Group.

Most people in Lanjiang City knew the name Weihai Group.

Even on a national level, Weihai Group held a significant position in the real estate industry.

With a conglomerate this large, how easy could it be to see the man behind it all?

“Excuse me, do you gentlemen have an appointment?” the receptionist asked us politely.

Song Xiaotian’s face was cold. “No appointment. Call your President Du directly and tell him that Song Xiaotian and Chen Mo are here to see him.”

The receptionist gave an awkward smile. “I’m sorry, but if you don’t have an appointment, please make one. Otherwise, our President Du does not see visitors.”

Song Xiaotian suppressed his temper, not taking it out on the receptionist. “Call your President Du right now and give him the two names I just mentioned, or I’ll trash this place today.”

The receptionist’s expression changed instantly, and she immediately called over the security guards.

It was likely the first time anyone had dared to cause trouble at Weihai Group. Seven or eight security guards quickly surrounded us.

“Looking for trouble, are we?”

“Either make an appointment or get out! Don’t you know where you are?”

“Causing a scene here… I’m afraid you won’t be able to handle the consequences-”

Before the security captain could finish his sentence, Song Xiaotian slapped him across the face.

I reckon he held back on that slap, but it still sent the security captain crashing to the floor.

“I tried being polite before resorting to force. Don’t push me,”

He spoke coldly, leading us directly toward the elevators.

The other guards naturally weren’t about to let it go.

Song Xiaotian didn’t say another word; a short baton snapped out from his sleeve.
