Chapter 58
Chapter 58
We might have been wrong from the very beginning.
Du Yuwei wasn’t trying to harm us; she was trying to ask for our help.
She wanted to tell us that Li Xiumei’s body was in the master bedroom, leading us to discover the corpse and learn the truth about Li Xiumei’s murder.
She wanted us to know that Du Ruhai is actually Lv Zhengxian.
And that family photo that appeared at the door of my rental apartment-she was the one who gave it to me.
Then there was the fact that she saved me last night…
“I think she already knows that Du Ruhai is her enemy.”
“After she died, she likely regained her childhood memories.”
“So now, she wants revenge.”
After hearing my analysis, Meng Yifan was stunned.
He clearly agreed with my logic.
Meng Yifan said, “Oh, I get it now. So there aren’t any ghosts trying to kill us… From start to finish, it’s just been these two ghosts who refuse to let things go, so they dragged us into this mess and made us offend Du Ruhai!”
“Holy shit! That is so incredibly unethical!”
“These two ghosts have no damn morals!”
To be honest, I felt the same way.
What did any of this have to do with Meng Yifan and me?
We were just two ordinary guys. How were we supposed to fight someone like Du Ruhai?
They were totally treating us like sacrificial lambs!
Song Xiaotian suppressed a laugh. “Let me tell you, you might be able to find a master to perform an Exorcism on a ghost, but no master can exorcise Du Ruhai. On the other hand, Du Ruhai can definitely ‘exorcise’ the two of you.”
Meng Yifan and I glared at him.
This guy was actually gloating.
“I understand now why Du Yuwei saved me.”
I continued, “We are the only ones who know the full truth, and the only ones who know Du Ruhai is Lv Zhengxian. Now that Du Ruhai wants to silence us, Du Yuwei definitely won’t let us die.”
“Right now, those two ghosts… are actually the least likely to harm us.”
Meng Yifan cursed, “What’s the damn point? Du Ruhai’s lethality is exactly the same as a ghost’s-maybe even worse. You almost died last night. Who knows what else is going to happen to the two of us?”
Song Xiaotian asked curiously, “Then why don’t these two ghosts just go straight to Du Ruhai for revenge? Wouldn’t that be easier? They’re ghosts, right? Are ghosts afraid of people?”
I replied, “Du Ruhai knows a bit about the occult, though we don’t know the extent of his knowledge. But a man of his stature doesn’t lack money. He could easily pay a master to stay by his side, advise him, and protect him… Wait!”
Meng Yifan and I spoke almost in unison: “Old Zhao Seven!”
It all clicked!
Old Zhao Seven was that master.
So the person who had been advising Du Ruhai all along was Old Zhao Seven…
“But why would Old Zhao Seven do things that harm Du Ruhai’s interests?”
“What is the reason?” I asked.
Meng Yifan replied, “With my IQ, what’s the point of asking me? How should I know why…”
Song Xiaotian added, “I’m just a bystander here…”
I sighed.
Perhaps because of my head injury, thinking about so many things at once suddenly gave me a headache.
Combined with my physical weakness, I couldn’t hold out any longer and lay back on the hospital bed to rest.
Even though I was resting, I couldn’t sleep. Those questions kept swirling in my mind.
I didn’t know how to escape this trouble.
I just wanted my life to go back to normal.
Meng Yifan and Song Xiaotian were also exhausted. They hadn’t slept all night while looking for me, and now they couldn’t keep their eyes open either. Both of them fell asleep right there in their chairs.
Around noon, someone pushed open the ward door and walked in.
Since I hadn’t actually fallen asleep, I woke up instantly.
I looked at the people entering. There were several of them, and one in particular looked extremely familiar.
Perhaps it was because of my head injury, but I didn’t recognize him at first. It took a moment for it to click.
Once I realized who he was, I reacted as if I’d seen a ghost, falling straight off the hospital bed in a panic.
“Brother Tian! Brother Tian!”
My screams quickly jolted Song Xiaotian and Meng Yifan awake.
They stood up, and as they saw the people walking in, their expressions shifted instantly.
The man who had arrived was Du Ruhai!
Never in our wildest dreams did we expect Du Ruhai to show up right at our doorstep!
Song Xiaotian instinctively pulled Meng Yifan behind him, eyeing the newcomer warily.
“I’m a man, not a ghost. Why are you all acting like you’ve seen a spirit in broad daylight?”
Du Ruhai had a smile on his face, looking completely harmless.
He had a very refined air about him that didn’t seem forced at all. Even though we were terrified of him, he struck me as elegant-as elegant as a school teacher or an approachable elder.
It was hard to reconcile this man with the bloodthirsty Lv Zhengxian.
“Boss Du, what do you want?”
Song Xiaotian was much calmer than Meng Yifan and me. He stood his ground composedly, his eyes locked onto Du Ruhai.
“I came today because I wanted to clear up a misunderstanding.”
Du Ruhai remained perfectly gentle. “Previously, there were some minor misunderstandings between myself, Mr. Meng, and Mr. Chen. Things got a bit unpleasant, and since Mr. Chen seems to have sustained some injuries, I came to pay a visit.”
“I am a businessman, after all, and businessmen believe that harmony brings wealth. I hope you all can work with me to resolve this little misunderstanding.”
With that, he gestured to his bodyguards.
Several bodyguards stepped forward and politely placed fruit baskets and nutritional supplements on the table.
The three of us were dazed, as if we hadn’t fully woken up yet. We had no idea what Du Ruhai was playing at.
But we knew one thing for certain: whatever he was selling, it wasn’t anything good.
Song Xiaotian chuckled. “For a big figure like Boss Du to come in person… I’m afraid my brother might not be able to handle the honor.”
Du Ruhai smiled as well. “There’s no need for that. We are all people, equals. I’ve just made a few stinking cents; it doesn’t make me any more noble than anyone else. I trust you can see my sincerity.”
With just those few sentences, I could already see the gap between us and Du Ruhai.
This was a man of profound depth and extreme cunning.
Setting aside his social status, if he wanted us dead, he probably had a hundred different ways to play us to death.
Out of the three of us, only Song Xiaotian wasn’t intimidated by his presence.
As he spoke, Du Ruhai actually started walking toward us.
We didn’t dare let him get close and immediately backed away in fright.
Seeming to sense the distress Meng Yifan and I were feeling, Du Ruhai acted like a concerned older brother. He stopped advancing and instead extended his right hand from a distance, offering a handshake.
“Mr. Meng, I’m sorry for making you spend those few days in custody. I, Du, have come specifically to offer my apologies.”
“Could you shake my hand? Let’s clear up this misunderstanding together. You’re a businessman too; harmony brings wealth, right?”
Meng Yifan didn’t dare take his hand.
Despite how much the guy talked about wanting to kill Du Ruhai, now that he was facing him directly, his face was white with fear.
“Boss Du is offering a handshake. What are you standing there for?” Song Xiaotian barked at Meng Yifan.
Meng Yifan hesitated for a moment before stepping forward to shake Du Ruhai’s hand.
“Boss Du, you’re… you’re too kind…”
“Haha, now the misunderstanding is cleared, and everyone is happy.”
Du Ruhai looked Meng Yifan straight in the eye and smiled. “So, Mr. Meng, could you please return my things to me? If I’m being too forward, you’re welcome to name a price.”
