Chapter 56
Chapter 56
Before my last shred of consciousness slipped away, I knew I was saved.
Having been deprived of oxygen for too long, I blacked out again.
By the time I woke up, dawn was approaching.
I slowly crawled up from the ground and looked around. No one was there, only a plastic bag left behind.
Inside the bag was a bottle of water, a loaf of bread, and a cell phone.
It wasn’t my phone; it had been left for me by whoever saved me.
I checked it and found it had a SIM card and could make calls.
Fortunately, I remembered Meng Yifan’s number and dialed it immediately.
It must have been five or six in the morning, but Meng Yifan picked up instantly.
“Who is this?”
“It’s me, Chen Mo…” I replied weakly.
“Chen Mo! Where are you?! Where the hell did you go? I’m still out here looking for you!”
Meng Yifan sounded incredibly agitated over the phone. It seemed he knew I was missing and had been searching for me the whole time.
I told him I had been buried alive, my phone was gone, and I had just been rescued. I was still at the site where it happened.
“What’s your location?”
“I don’t know…”
“Then look around, damn it! If you don’t tell me where you are, how am I supposed to find you?”
I hurriedly scanned my surroundings and managed to figure out roughly where I was.
“I’m at Xishan Park, on a slope…”
“Wait there, we’re coming right now!”
After hanging up, I slumped onto the ground, too weak to even stand.
I didn’t dare touch the bread in the bag, nor did I dare drink the water.
Because I had remembered who saved me.
I would recognize that silhouette even if it were burned to ashes.
It was Du Yuwei!
I couldn’t fathom why Du Yuwei would save me.
Not only had she saved my life, but she had also left me food and a phone. If it weren’t for her today, I’d probably be dead by now.
Yet, I couldn’t be absolutely certain it was her. I had been delirious and oxygen-deprived at the time; I didn’t know if it had been a hallucination.
I sat in the pile of dirt for about forty minutes before I heard people nearby calling my name.
It was the voices of Meng Yifan and Song Xiaotian.
I was stunned for a moment. Why were those two together? As far as I knew, they didn’t even know each other.
I couldn’t shout back, so I quickly turned the phone’s screen brightness to the max and held it up high.
“He’s over there!”
The two of them spotted me quickly.
When they reached me, I saw that their faces were pale with fright.
“Holy shit, holy shit!”
“You scared the hell out of me!”
“I just stepped away to buy a pack of cigarettes, and you vanished!”
Song Xiaotian was even more frantic than Meng Yifan.
I figured that when he returned from buying cigarettes and found me gone, he must have been scared out of his wits.
Without much talk, the two of them hoisted me up and took turns carrying me down the mountain on their backs.
Though I was mostly fine, I had a gash on my head, and it wasn’t shallow.
On the way to the hospital, I asked how the two of them ended up together.
“You useless prick!” Song Xiaotian couldn’t help but curse. “You got yourself kidnapped in the time it took me to go to the bathroom. I knew it had to be those people, so I contacted Fang Man and got Meng Yifan’s number from her.”
“Damn it, we’ve been looking for you until now without even a drop of water. We mobilized over a hundred brothers and still couldn’t find you. I thought you’d gone to the Netherworld!”
“Tell me, what good are you? If you can’t fight back, can’t you at least yell for help?!”
Song Xiaotian’s scolding made my face flush with embarrassment.
But I was deeply moved.
He must have called up every single one of his subordinates to search the entire city for me.
Growing up, Meng Yifan was my only best friend, but now I had another.
“You really can’t blame me. Who would’ve thought I’d get ambushed while taking a piss…”
I hurriedly explained the details of the ambush to them.
That person must have been hiding in there for a long time.
But I couldn’t figure out how he knew we would definitely stop at that gas station, or how he knew I’d definitely go to the restroom.
“I only realized it after you were taken,” Song Xiaotian said, his face grim. “I filled up my tank not too long ago and haven’t driven much lately. When we went inside to deliver the Ashes Urn, someone must have drained the gas from my car. That’s why we were forced to stop at the nearest station.”
“As for whether you went to the bathroom or not, they couldn’t have predicted that. But even if you hadn’t, something would have happened sooner or later.”
“Du Ruhai is dead set on silencing you because you didn’t just go to his villa-you went to his old family home too.”
Meng Yifan’s eyes were red with rage. “Just because he wants someone dead, they have to die? He thinks he can do whatever he wants just because he has money? Fine! If it comes down to it, I’ll throw away my entire net worth to hire someone to take him out!”
Meng Yifan’s face was also covered in bruises. He must have suffered quite a bit during those few days in the precinct.
I knew he was just venting; he wouldn’t actually dare to kill someone.
He didn’t have the guts, and I had even less.
The atmosphere suddenly turned heavy.
Song Xiaotian abruptly asked, “You still haven’t said who saved you. Who’s this Good Samaritan who does a good deed and disappears without leaving a name?”
I opened my mouth to say it was Du Yuwei.
But after a moment’s thought, I decided to keep it to myself for now. “Let’s get to the hospital first. I’ll tell you once we’re there.”
Song Xiaotian was terrified of ghosts. I didn’t dare say it yet.
I was afraid that if I did, we’d end up in a car accident.
Soon, we arrived at the hospital.
I was rushed into the emergency room. It took over an hour just to treat my wounds; I ended up with nearly thirty stitches in my head.
Aside from the visible injuries, I also had a concussion.
In the hospital room.
I was on an IV drip, and by now, the sun had risen.
Meng Yifan took a phone call. I didn’t know who was calling, but his expression remained ugly throughout the entire conversation.
After a while, he started shouting at the person on the other end.
“I didn’t steal a damn thing from you! Stop fucking talking shit to me!”
“You’re nothing but a dog kept by Du Ruhai! Who the hell do you think you’re acting tough with?”
“I’m remembering what you did, burying Chen Mo alive. Just you wait, you’re going to get what’s coming to you sooner or later!”
After he hung up, I stared at him in shock.
“Who was that?”
“One of Du Ruhai’s men.”
Meng Yifan’s face was livid. “They claim I went to Du Ruhai’s house last night and stole something, and they want me to return it. Steal? My ass! I’m not an idiot, why would I dare go to his house to steal anything!”
I sat bolt upright in bed, startled.
Because I moved too fast, my head throbbed with a buzzing pain.
Boss Du’s house… had been robbed again?
Song Xiaotian couldn’t help but chuckle. “Boss Du’s place really is a magnet for thieves, isn’t it? One wave after another.”
Meng Yifan muttered, “It’s strange. Other than us, who else would go to Du Ruhai’s house to steal? Who would dare?”
Song Xiaotian said, “Whatever he lost must be extremely important, otherwise they wouldn’t have called you. Moreover, he probably thinks you stole it to use as leverage to save Chen Mo’s life.”
I thought about it for a long time until someone suddenly came to mind.
I felt it was highly likely that this person was the thief!
I looked at Song Xiaotian and Meng Yifan and said, “Could it be… Old Zhao Seven?”
