Brother Liu is a cop-he wouldn’t ignore my calls.

But I called him several times and he didn’t pick up. The last time I called, he just turned off his phone.

It was obvious he was deliberately avoiding me. He was afraid of getting into trouble.

Seventh Master was right after all. The power of the wealthy is beyond the imagination of ordinary people like us.

It hadn’t even been long since those two were arrested, and Brother Liu was already distancing himself from me.

There’s no hope relying on him now. I’ll have to spend money to find another connection.

That night, I stayed at this motel.

It’s not that I’m heartless, but I’ve got a lot to deal with next-I need to run around looking for connections, and I still have to deal with Li Xiumei and Du Yuwei, those two Ghosts coming after me.

So I need to rest well. Worrying blindly won’t save my teammates.

I kept those two Ashes Urns in my backpack and didn’t take them out. Seventh Master had asked me to take them with me. I didn’t really understand why, but since he told me to, there must be a reason, so I have to keep them safe.

Lying in bed, I was still a bit worried about Meng Yifan and Seventh Master, but I fell asleep soon enough.

My sleep was light tonight. I don’t know how long I’d slept before a sudden knocking at the door jolted me awake.

I shot up from the bed, my first thought was that the police had come to arrest me.

But I quickly realized-if it really was the police, would they bother knocking? Wouldn’t they just come in and pin me down?

“Chen Mo, open the door! You’re sleeping pretty soundly, aren’t you!”

Hearing that voice, I was stunned.

It wasn’t the police-it was Meng Yifan!

Damn!

Wasn’t he arrested together with Seventh Master?

Did the security guards not call the police?

No, that can’t be!

If he hadn’t been arrested, he should’ve called me right away.

How did he know I was at this motel?

I was suspicious. I jumped off the bed and walked to the door, shouting outside, “Meng Yifan, is that you?”

There was a pause outside, then he replied, “Are you kidding? You can’t even recognize my voice?”

I asked him, “How did you know I was here? Where’s Seventh Master?”

He replied again, “Just open the door first, I’ll come in and tell you.”

I didn’t open the door. Instead, I quickly lay down on the floor.

There was a gap between the door and the floor-not big, but enough for me to see the floor outside.

I saw a pair of red high heels reflected on the floor.

Seeing those red high heels, my scalp almost exploded.

It was Du Yuwei!

She hadn’t knocked on my door the previous two nights-one night because Meng Yifan and I were at the bathhouse, the other because we were doing Soul Summoning for Li Xiumei. That night we were doing Spirit Writing, and in the second half of the night we were at the hospital. I figured it was because Seventh Master was there, so Du Yuwei didn’t dare come.

She hadn’t come for two nights, and I’d almost forgotten about it.

I was so scared I didn’t dare say a word, just lay there dumbly on the floor.

“Chen Mo, what are you doing? Open the door!”

It was still Meng Yifan’s voice outside, sounding impatient.

“Stop pretending!”

I mustered up my courage and exposed the Ghost outside: “Since when did Meng Yifan start wearing high heels? Du Yuwei, I know it’s you. Stop pretending.”

There was a moment of silence outside, no more talking.

I figured she was embarrassed.

But soon, a bluish-purple face and a venomous eye appeared through the gap between the door and the floor, staring at me fiercely.

I gasped in fright and jumped up immediately.

“Bang! Bang! Bang!”

The knocking started again outside.

Then, a cold voice came through: “Give me back my things. Give me back my things.”
“What is it!” I cried out in fright, “I didn’t take your things!”

“Give me back my things, give me back my things.” She kept repeating this sentence.

I was so scared my hair stood on end, and I tried to recall exactly what I had taken from her.

Very soon, I remembered-it was those two Ashes Urns.

Those two Ashes Urns belonged to the latest victims of the Seven Deaths for Life Exchange. They were essential for Du Yuwei’s resurrection.

Now I finally understood why Seventh Master wanted me to take away those two Ashes Urns. These things were very important to Du Yuwei, and Du Ruhai was also desperate to bring Du Yuwei back to life.

If, in the end, I couldn’t get Seventh Master and Meng Yifan out, I could use these two Ashes Urns to threaten Du Ruhai and force him to release Seventh Master and Meng Yifan.

So these two Ashes Urns were my only bargaining chips-I couldn’t hand them over.

I made up my mind not to give them up, no matter how much she knocked on the door, I wouldn’t respond to her anymore.

“Give me back my things, give me back my things.”

She kept repeating this sentence, like a robot.

The sound made my ears ache.

But I had already discovered a pattern: no matter how she knocked, as long as I didn’t open the door, she couldn’t come in.

If she had a way to get in, she wouldn’t be knocking so politely.

It seemed Seventh Master was right-Du Yuwei hadn’t been dead for long, and she didn’t have the ability to come in and kill me.

I listened to the knocking for about three or four hours.

She knocked and chanted, all the way until dawn, when the knocking finally stopped.

I knew she had left, so I went to the bathroom to wash my face.

Looking in the mirror, I noticed my complexion had gotten even worse.

I remembered Seventh Master saying that if Du Yuwei kept haunting us, even if she did nothing but keep knocking, one day, Meng Yifan and I would sleep and never wake up.

After leaving the bathroom, I picked up my phone and called Xie Peng.

Xie Peng was an employee at our shop. Meng Yifan and I hadn’t been to the shop for several days.

When the call connected, Xie Peng asked why I hadn’t returned to the shop and if something had happened.

I didn’t dare tell him too much, just asked if the police had come by.

“Police? Why would the police come?” Xie Peng sounded worried. “Second-in-Command, what happened between you and the boss? Why would you get the police involved?”

I sighed, “We’ve run into some trouble. Don’t ask too much for now. Tell the old staff to keep an eye on the shop. The boss and I probably won’t be back for a while. If the police come and ask anything, just answer truthfully.”

Xie Peng was silent for a few seconds. “If the police ask whether you’ve called me, what should I say…”

I thought for a moment. “Just answer honestly. Anyway, none of this concerns you. But if the police want you to trick me into coming out, cough once before you call me.”

Xie Peng: “Alright, I understand. There’s one more thing… Fang Man is back. She’s asking about you…”

I immediately frowned.

Fang Man was my girlfriend. Her grandmother had passed away recently, so she took leave to go back home for the funeral.

She’s looking for me now, but I don’t dare to see her.

I’ve gotten myself into so much trouble-if I go see her, what if she gets dragged into this?

But then I suddenly remembered something: one of Fang Man’s relatives is a police officer.

Now that Brother Liu has distanced himself from me, I need to find a way to get Meng Yifan and Seventh Master out.

Looks like I still have to meet Fang Man.
