chapter 34
Tonight’s trip was truly worth it.
Originally, we just wanted to find Du Yuwei’s remains and have Seventh Master perform an Exorcism for her.
Now, not only did we find her, but we also followed the clues and uncovered many truths.
We learned the real cause of Li Xiumei’s death, found out where Lv Zhengxian is now, and even discovered the truth behind the Massacre Case fifteen years ago.
And all these things are inseparable from Lv Zhengxian; you could say he orchestrated everything himself.
What’s even more twisted is that he actually… he fucking… he actually married Du Yuwei!
I reckon if this guy dies, he’ll go straight to the Eighteen Levels of Hell.
“The police have now reopened the investigation into the Massacre Case from fifteen years ago and issued a new warrant for Lv Zhengxian. But I think this warrant is just for show, because in this world, Lv Zhengxian no longer exists-only Du Ruhai remains.”
Seventh Master said darkly, “And the new round of Seven Deaths for Life Exchange has already begun.”
As he spoke, he walked toward the wedding bed in the room.
The room was large and fully furnished-even a wedding bed was there.
But we really couldn’t imagine what Lv Zhengxian prepared this wedding bed for.
Could it be… he came here every night to sleep?
Sleeping with a corpse?
Just thinking about it gave me the chills.
Seventh Master walked up to the wedding bed, squatted down, and reached underneath, searching for something.
Soon, he pulled out two urn-like objects.
Meng Yifan and I looked closely, and our faces changed dramatically.
They weren’t ordinary ceramic jars-they were ash urns…
Each marked with a large character for “memorial.”
“Weren’t you curious where the Corpse Oil on that Evil Painting came from?”
Seventh Master patted the two ash urns. “I reckon it came from here. The new round of Seven Deaths for Life Exchange already has two victims.”
I stared at those two ash urns, as if looking at the future home of Meng Yifan and myself.
Maybe, before long, the two of us would be lying inside them.
Meng Yifan fumed, “He kills people just because he wants to-doesn’t the law exist anymore? Let’s take these two ash urns and report him. The evidence is solid; I refuse to believe no one can stop him!”
I advised, “You’d better not get any reckless ideas. If you report him, it’s as good as turning yourself in. In the end, we’ll be the ones getting arrested.”
If the police ask how we got these ash urns, what would we say?
That we stole them from Du Ruhai’s house?
Then we’d be the ones getting arrested.
Seventh Master sighed too. “Don’t think things are that simple. With my years of experience in the underworld, if you report him, the outcome will be roughly as follows.”
“The moment you report, Du Ruhai will get the news immediately. He’ll send people to clear out everything in this room. We’ll end up in jail, die inside, and Du Ruhai will go on doing whatever he wants. No one will ever know he’s actually Lv Zhengxian.”
“The truth is cruel, but that’s how it is.”
Meng Yifan instantly deflated.
We may be ordinary folks, but we’ve seen a bit more than most.
The tricks of the rich are exactly like those in movies and TV dramas.
Seventh Master was definitely not exaggerating.
I said, “Since we’ve already found Du Yuwei’s remains, let’s just perform the Exorcism for her. As long as she’s exorcised, Du Ruhai won’t need to continue the Seven Deaths for Life Exchange. First, we’ll be safe; second, no one else will die. It’s a win-win.”
After all, these were the words of the Seventh Master: as long as we found Du Yuwei’s body, he could perform the Exorcism.
But unexpectedly, the Seventh Master dealt a heavy blow to both me and Meng Yifan.
“I can’t perform the Exorcism.”
“If the Seven Deaths for Life Exchange hadn’t started, I could have done it. But now, two people have already died, the Seven Deaths for Life Exchange has begun, and I simply have no way to perform the Exorcism for her.”
The Seventh Master’s words were like a sharp sword, stabbing straight into our hearts.
My heart turned cold.
“Seventh Master, is there really no other way?” I asked.
The Seventh Master thought for a moment and said, “There is a way, but it requires Du Yuwei’s Birth Date and Time. Do you know her Birth Date and Time? I doubt even Du Ruhai knows.”
I let out a long sigh, my heart sinking even further.
Du Yuwei was the only survivor of the Massacre Case; her family had already been killed by Du Ruhai.
Du Ruhai really was unlikely to know Du Yuwei’s Birth Date and Time, unless Du Yuwei herself had told him.
But when the Massacre Case happened, Du Yuwei was only five or six years old. At that age, how could she possibly remember her own Birth Date and Time?
“I don’t think Du Ruhai necessarily doesn’t know.”
Meng Yifan looked at us and said, “Why did Du Ruhai spare Du Yuwei’s life and take her away back then? I think it must be because he liked her at first sight. Even though we can’t understand his twisted thinking, someone as ruthless as him wouldn’t have spared Du Yuwei for no reason, right?”
“Since he liked her, and at the time of the crime he also ransacked Du Yuwei’s house, could he have taken her household registration book as well? That would have Du Yuwei’s date of birth on it.”
It was truly a wake-up call.
I slapped my thigh excitedly. “That’s actually possible!”
The Seventh Master also stood up and said, “It’s not very likely, but it’s not impossible. Let’s look for it, let’s start searching this room first.”
Suddenly, I remembered something: “But the Birth Date and Time requires the exact time of birth, right? The household registration book wouldn’t have something that specific.”
The Seventh Master said seriously, “As long as we know her date of birth, that’s enough. As for the time, there are only twelve two-hour periods in a day. At worst, we’ll just try them one by one.”
Once we decided, we didn’t dare waste any time and immediately started searching for Du Yuwei’s Birth Date and Time.
Because there were so many things in this room, searching it all would take quite a while.
The main thing was, there was still a corpse sitting in this room. Every time I turned my back to Du Yuwei’s body, I felt a chill run down my spine.
I kept imagining that she would suddenly pounce on me and bite me when I wasn’t paying attention.
And those paper figures, drawn with such lifelike features, cast shadows on the wall under the candlelight. Every time I glanced at them, I felt an urgent need to pee.
Just as I finished searching a cabinet, I caught a glimpse of Du Yuwei’s body out of the corner of my eye.
But it wasn’t just her body I saw…
I noticed that her tightly shut eyes seemed to have opened.
I thought it was just my imagination, so I quickly looked up to check again.
But when I looked, I locked eyes with her. That bluish-purple face hadn’t changed, but those eyes were wide open, staring straight at me.
“Holy shit!!”
I was so terrified I nearly lost it and screamed on the spot.
Meng Yifan was startled, scrambling toward the Seventh Master: “What’s wrong, why are you screaming like that!”
The Seventh Master was also stunned, looking at me in confusion.
I raised my hand and pointed at Du Yuwei’s body: “She… she just opened her eyes! She was looking at me just now!”
