Chapter 110
Chapter 110
After I sent the text to Song Xiaotian, I turned off my phone.
This place was a rental; I couldn’t die here. If I did, the apartment would become a stigmatized property, and the landlord would be the one suffering the consequences.
I changed into clean clothes, locked the door, and left the house, wandering aimlessly through the streets.
Eventually, my feet led me to a bridge. Below it, the river surged.
If I just jumped from here, this life of mine would finally be over.
But my life should have ended fifteen years ago. The Seven Deaths for Life Exchange had allowed me to live for an extra fifteen years, but during those years, seven families had lived in agony.
As for Du Yuwei’s family, she was the only one left alive.
If it wasn’t for me, her life wouldn’t have been so tragic.
Thinking of this, I gripped the railing and prepared to climb over.
But when the moment of death actually arrived, I was damn well terrified.
As soon as I hooked one leg over the railing, my body wouldn’t stop shaking.
I cursed myself for being useless. I had hurt so many people, caused my father to face a firing squad, and yet, in the end, I didn’t even have the courage to commit suicide.
Right then, several voices filled with curses drifted from behind me.
“Why aren’t you dead yet!”
“You coward! You’ve hurt so many people. You have the nerve to keep living, but you don’t have the courage to die?”
“Jump! Quickly!”
I turned my head and saw the people my father had killed. They were back.
The expressions on their faces were even more hateful and vindictive than before, as if they wouldn’t rest until I was dead.
With tears streaming down my face, I nodded at them. “I’ll die. I’m going to die right now. I’m sorry. I’m giving my life back to you.”
At that moment, another person suddenly appeared among the victims.
I looked closely and actually saw my mother.
She looked just as she did when she was young, exactly as she appeared in my memories.
The moment I saw her, a wave of bitterness surged in my heart. I cried out, “Mom!”
“I’m not your mother! My son died fifteen years ago! You’re a monster bought with seven lives! You don’t deserve to call me Mom! Go die! Just go die already!”
Even my mother didn’t want me to live. She was cursing me like I was a monster.
The last shred of my will to live vanished.
Her words broke my heart more than anyone else’s.
“Mom, don’t talk to me like that. I’m going to die right now. Please, don’t say that…”
Sobbing, I climbed onto the railing and glanced down at the river’s surface.
Suddenly, I wasn’t afraid at all.
Even my mother wanted me dead. I couldn’t stand being alive anymore.
“I’m giving my life back to you…”
I stood atop the railing, my legs trembling violently, but I mustered the courage to step out into the air.
Just as I was falling, a hand suddenly grabbed me. I didn’t fall all the way, but I was left dangling outside the railing.
I looked up and realized the person who had saved me was actually Du Yuwei.
She wasn’t wearing the Red Wedding Dress. She was dressed as she had been the first time I met her, in a long black dress…
Seeing her, my heart was instantly flooded with guilt.
“Let go!”
“I’m your enemy! The person who hired Lv Zhengxian back then was my father!”
“My father did it to save me! Your family died because of me!”
But even after I shouted that, she didn’t let go.
Her face was full of panic, and because she was gripping me so hard, her expression was strained, and sweat even broke out on her forehead.
I noticed something was wrong.
Her palm felt warm.
She didn’t seem like a ghost!
“Who are you? You’re not Du Yuwei?”
As soon as I asked, my body suddenly sank a bit lower.
She was losing her grip, and half of her body was now hanging over the railing with me.
“You… hurry, get up here!”
She gritted her teeth and shouted at me. Her voice sounded exactly like Du Yuwei’s.
But I couldn’t get back up, and there was no reason for me to.
“Let go, or you’ll fall too!”
“I can’t hold on…”
She looked at me in terror.
Soon, her grip failed. I plummeted vertically toward the surface of the river.
*Splash!*
The height was enough to make my head spin. Combined with my drunken state, I swallowed a huge mouthful of water the moment I hit the surface.
My body’s survival instinct forced me to claw at the water, but my clouded consciousness quickly failed me. I swallowed more water, and it rushed up my nose, causing a sharp, stinging pain in my brain.
I might have been the fastest person to lose consciousness after drowning, but right before I blacked out, I heard another *splash* nearby. It sounded like something else had fallen in.
Then, everything went dark.
By all rights, I should have died.
Yet, I found that I wasn’t dead. I don’t know how long I was unconscious, but I eventually regained awareness. I felt a pair of lips pressed against mine, blowing air into my lungs.
After the rescue breaths, a pair of hands began rhythmically pressing down on my chest.
After a while, I suddenly coughed up several mouthfuls of water, clearing my windpipe. The violent coughing fit forced my eyes open.
The woman who looked exactly like Du Yuwei was slumped on the ground nearby, drenched and gasping for air. Seeing me wake up, she scrambled to her feet and ran away.
I wanted to call out to her, but my voice was lost to another fit of coughing. Deprived of oxygen, my body felt weak and leaden. I collapsed back onto the ground after only a few steps.
I didn’t understand why she saved me…
Even though I didn’t know who she was, she was definitely with Du Yuwei.
I had just told her that I was the one who ruined Du Yuwei’s family, that my father had hired Lv Zhengxian. Why would she still save me?
I lay on the riverbank for about half an hour. Just as I managed to push myself up, two hurried figures burst into my field of vision. Meng Yifan and Song Xiaotian were running toward me.
“Fuck! What are you doing?!”
“Are you fucking crazy? Have you got a death wish?!”
Meng Yifan cursed as he ran. He looked like he wanted to slap me when he reached me, but seeing my pathetic state, he held back.
I looked at them in surprise and asked, “How did you know I was here?”
“Old Zhao Seven told us,” Meng Yifan said irritably.
“Old Zhao Seven…” I was still dazed. “How did he know?”
“Don’t worry about that right now. I’m asking you, what the hell were you doing? You fucking jumped into the river? Do you have a death wish?!” Meng Yifan roared.
I lowered my head and said nothing.
Even though I had just experienced death-and would be dead if not for that woman-and even though I had narrowly escaped, I still didn’t want to live.
Song Xiaotian remained silent the whole time, but his fists were clenched. He was likely disgusted by my lack of spine.
He hauled me up and asked very calmly, “Do you really want to die?”
I nodded.
“Fair enough. Not everyone has the courage to face something like this.”
Song Xiaotian didn’t lose his temper. Instead, he continued, “In my eyes, your father is a monster. But to be honest, he doesn’t bear much responsibility for Xiaoman’s death. The real culprit is Du Ruhai.”
“If you really don’t want to live, I won’t stop you. But do something meaningful. Instead of committing suicide here like a coward, you’d be better off going after Du Ruhai. Take him down with you. At least that way, you’ll have avenged Xiaoman.”
