Chapter 28

Rule two matched what the woman at the information desk had told Lin Yinxi yesterday.

But Lin Yinxi had been a temporary worker yesterday and had not received this manual for permanent employees.

Thinking of that, she pressed her lips together.

She needed to get an employee manual and confirm the night-shift rules as soon as possible.

Lin Yinxi told Xu Haitang that Chen Fei had been taken away.

Xu Haitang’s face was stern. “Those two newcomers are far too bound up in their feelings. Sooner or later, it’ll get them killed.”

Lin Yinxi neither agreed nor disagreed.

“Haitang, I think we have to stop being visitors if we want to find Zone C,” she said. “Every part-time job is dangerous, and each has different permissions. We need to find one that lets us enter Zone C.”

Xu Haitang nodded. “Yes. I also learned that the Water Quality Manager mentioned in the cleaning manual goes to Jellyfish Café for a coffee every morning. I’ll find a way to approach that entity.”

She looked up and glanced behind Lin Yinxi. “I forgot to ask. Where’s Yang Shu?”

“He couldn’t pay for his meal yesterday, so they kept him at the café to wash dishes.”

“Be careful around him.”

“Hm?”

Xu Haitang had known countless people. Frowning, she said, “I think he’s taken someone’s life before.”

Lin Yinxi clapped her hands together and nodded. “He certainly doesn’t look like a good person.”

Xu Haitang had her own way of judging people.

Among their group, she saw Ba Hu as all bluster and no backbone, an ill-mannered idiot.

The young couple seemed overly emotional and lacking in opinions of their own, but kindhearted. Ordinary little novices.

Lin Yinxi seemed clever and friendly, outwardly frail but hiding her true abilities. She must have tremendous talents concealed.

Only Yang Shu gave Xu Haitang a cold, sinister feeling.

He certainly had not grown up in the same kind of environment as the rest of them.

They agreed to exchange information at Jellyfish Café every morning at ten.

As they were parting, Xu Haitang spoke again.

“If I’m not there on time one day, you don’t have to wait for me,” she added suddenly in a low voice.

After their conversation, Lin Yinxi did not linger in Zone A.

She returned to the logistics area in Zone B.

“You want the Employee Manual?” The fish-headed entity looked at Lin Yinxi. His gills moved with a wet squelch. “Are young people this conscientious nowadays?”

He bent down and rummaged beneath the counter.

“Let me look…”

“Reflections of an Outstanding Employee… How to Improve Visitor Conversion Rates… Employee Manual…”

“Ah, found it.”

The fish-headed entity pulled a damp booklet from the cabinet. Its cover had swollen from soaking.

Large words were printed on it: Deep Blue Aquarium General Employee Manual.

Looking deeply pleased, he handed it to Lin Yinxi.

“Very good. Such initiative. There aren’t many newcomers willing to learn the rules on their own anymore.”

“Long-serving employees get restless. They either sneak off to rest or keep thinking about leaving the aquarium.”

His mouth slowly split open, exposing densely packed fine teeth.

“Heh heh heh… You newcomers have so much more energy.”

Lin Yinxi accepted the General Employee Manual with both hands.

She did not want to say much. Why waste saliva and energy on talking?

But the fish-headed entity kept staring at her.

She forced herself to speak. “As a newcomer, I have plenty to learn. I’m grateful you’re willing to give me an opportunity, sir. I really value this position.”

That round of flattery nearly made him want to give her a permanent position on the spot.

Lin Yinxi carried the General Employee Manual back to her dormitory.

The persistent fishy smell always filled the room.

She sat on the bed’s edge and opened the manual.

The title page bore an official seal.

Deep Blue Aquarium General Employee Regulations

(Work comes first. There is no place for useless things within the territory ruled by the Green-Eyed Rabbit Containment Center.

Welcome to the Logistics Department. Deep Blue Aquarium offers ordinary people precious employment opportunities. All employees must value their work and their normal, healthy lives.)

Lin Yinxi flipped through it. The front sections contained rules for permanent employees.

She turned to the section for part-time and temporary workers.

[1. Your blue work wristband is your only protection when moving around Zone B.

If a substantial portion of your work wristband is accidentally soaked through with red water, remove it immediately and throw it into a rubbish bin. Then crouch where you are with both hands over your head and wait for a recovery worker to take you away.

You are no longer an employee at that point.]

[2. All employees live alone in individual dormitory rooms. We do not assign roommates.

If another employee attempts to stay in your dormitory, posing as your roommate, report them to your supervisor immediately. Do not let them take over your dormitory.]

[3. If you hear an intruder making bubbling sounds in the middle of the night, or discover them pressed against the balcony glass looking inside, keep your eyes closed and pretend to sleep.

This is merely mild sleepwalking caused by work stress. Do not wake them, and never answer any questions they ask.]

[4. Cafeteria meals are served according to position rank. There are three grades: Meal A, Meal B, and Meal C.

Temporary and part-time workers are assigned Meal C by default.

Complaining about the food in the cafeteria is strictly prohibited.

The Head Chef has a violent temper. If she hears you complain, she may enthusiastically prepare an extra serving using the raw ingredients you brought with you.]

[5. Employees do not need empathy.

Whether dealing with visitors who wander into Zone B, exhibits in the tanks, or feed awaiting processing, conduct yourself professionally.

Any sympathy for “ingredients” is a sign of mental abnormality and will lower your performance evaluation.]

Lin Yinxi read through the rules one by one. When she reached the roommate rule, cold sweat ran down her back.

Knock, knock, knock.

Someone knocked on the dormitory door.

Before Lin Yinxi could speak, it was pushed open.

Song Qianli poked her head inside. “Hm? Didn’t you go out during the day? Why are you back early?”

“I came back to rest.” Lin Yinxi immediately hid the manual.

The tips of Song Qianli’s ears reddened. Tucking a loose strand behind her ear, she said a little bashfully, “I have quite a lot of things. I may need to use your cabinet. I hope you don’t mind.”

Though nobody pushed it, the door creaked fully open.

Behind Song Qianli stood two enormous suitcases.

So big. As big as two Song Qianlis!

Lin Yinxi was dumbstruck.

Song Qianli spoke with gentle politeness, but her actions showed none of it.

She dragged the cases inside, expertly opened Lin Yinxi’s cabinet, and began hanging her clothes in it one by one.

Looking at those clothes, Lin Yinxi felt her heart sink.

They were all blue work uniforms in different sizes.

Everything from S to XXXL.
