Chapter 193
Chapter 193
Inside King’s office, King sat across from the chairman, smiling radiantly. “You came.”
The chairman rubbed his hands together, naked desire gleaming in his eyes. “What made you change your mind? Are you willing to be mine now?”
King’s smile was seductive but did not reach her eyes. “I want to make a wager. If you win, I’ll be yours. But if I win… you give me your soul. What do you say?”
The chairman fell silent, rubbing his interlaced hands together twice.
Gambling…
He had dabbled in it. He was no regular, but he knew a thing or two.
Gambling with a beauty like this was both provocative and thrilling.
Winning would naturally be ideal, but even if he lost…
The chairman almost laughed. These silly little women really were naive.
Give her his soul if he lost? Even if he agreed, could she actually take it?
They were only pretty words meant to make their relationship last.
“No problem. What do you want to play?” Convinced he had considered everything, the chairman put on a gentlemanly air as he asked.
King smiled and lowered her eyes, concealing the excitement that flared within them. “Just one hand of blackjack.”
The chairman tapped at his phone and said something to the person on the other end. Before long, a bodyguard brought in a box of playing cards.
King moved the fingers of her left hand, their nails painted burgundy, and held the deck. With a sweep of her thumb, the cards fluttered like butterflies into her right hand.
King executed a beautiful flourish and shuffled the cards casually. The light in her eyes abruptly took on an almost pathological madness.
Her pearly teeth grazed her cherry-red lower lip. “Then let’s begin.”
While King lured the chairman away, Cheng Miao entrusted her back to Qiudong and slipped into the chairman’s office.
Before the bodyguards hidden in the shadows could press the emergency button, Qiudong knocked them unconscious with clean chops to the neck and dumped them in a heap inside the storage room.
Cheng Miao looked at the computer, which was still on. She did not know whether this was part of the instance’s design or whether the chairman had too much faith in his security, but the computer actually had no password.
Then again, the chairman’s office was not somewhere anyone could simply walk into.
At least this spared Cheng Miao from having to use the password-cracking skills she had hastily studied.
After entering the office, Cheng Miao first used an alternate account she had registered to tentatively post some news about the company on social media.
Ten minutes passed without the post being deleted. Instead, it drew more and more comments. Cheng Miao knew she had found the right place.
The network on the chairman’s computer really was different from the employees’ network. It was not monitored.
Cheng Miao sent the email she had prepared in advance to the oversight agency. After a moment’s hesitation, she also posted the evidence on social media.
Watching the social media app erupt into a frenzy, Cheng Miao wasted no more time. She logged out of the account and slipped out of the office.
Back at her desk, Cheng Miao’s heart beat rapidly. There was no way to conceal what she had done. Qiudong could take care of the security guards for her, but one look at the surveillance footage would reveal that she was responsible.
If outside intervention did not arrive as quickly as she expected, or did not come at all, then she would have to rely on force.
Cheng Miao waited for half an hour. The social media app on her phone had practically crashed beneath the flood of people ravenous for gossip.
Fortunately, the post was still there. It had not been deleted.
She could sense undercurrents surging through the company. She could not identify exactly what was wrong, but she was certain something had changed.
When she saw the chairman stumble out of King’s office like a puppet on strings, Cheng Miao raised an eyebrow.
As expected, veteran players were all experts. None could be underestimated.
The chairman had been neutralized, but the company clearly had other people in power.
So when the company president came looking for her, Cheng Miao was mentally prepared.
What she was not prepared for was Qiudong stepping in to block their way as they walked.
“Which section are you from? Don’t block the way!” The man at the front carried himself like a self-important official, contempt written across his face.
Cheng Miao was certain that every last member of upper management knew the company’s secrets.
“Her accomplice,” Qiudong said expressionlessly, as sparing with words as ever. The curt answer left the leader feeling insulted, yet inexplicably wary at the same time.
“Take them both!” The man ground his molars and had the two of them shoved into a hidden room through a secret door in the president’s office.
Cheng Miao examined the hidden chamber’s dim lighting and walls that blocked both light and sound exceptionally well. The company not only used despicable means to imprison its employees, but had even built a private interrogation room?
In the real world, the chairman was the person who held the largest share of the company’s stock, while the president was the one who actually managed its affairs.
But in this instance, the chairman appeared most often. Whether because he was too busy working or for some other reason, the president had shown himself only a few times.
So when this reasonably handsome but vicious-eyed man entered, Cheng Miao did not immediately realize that he was the president.
“Was it you two who made those posts online?” The president scrutinized them.
His gaze paused on Qiudong for only an instant, but those unpleasant eyes lingered on Cheng Miao.
Cheng Miao did not notice the aura around Qiudong abruptly turn frigid. She focused on handling the situation. “It was me. I’ve always been curious about the outside world.”
The president stepped closer, lowered his head, and studied Cheng Miao’s face. His voice dripped with contempt. “You’ve got a decent face, but not much of a brain. Do you really think posting something online puts you beyond our reach?”
Cheng Miao did not answer. She was gambling that they had not discovered the email she sent.
Sure enough, the president frivolously lifted Cheng Miao’s chin with a finger and inspected her critically for a long moment. “Get rid of the man. As for this woman… keep her around for a little while.”
He did not say what he intended to keep her for, but his tone gave Cheng Miao a fairly good idea.
In the blink of an eye, the Kun-Bone Dagger appeared in Cheng Miao’s hand. She darted behind the president in one smooth motion and drove a vicious kick into his lower leg.
Caught off guard, the president stumbled to the floor. Before he could rise, he felt something cold and murderous press against his carotid artery.
“Don’t move.” Cheng Miao’s voice was icy, but in truth, she was still debating whether to act.
She had become adept at killing ghosts, but killing a person… she had never tried it.
Should she kill a man like this on the spot, or keep him alive as a witness?
Someone had to take the blame for the company’s mess.
The president held his body rigid, not daring to move, but he could still clearly sense Cheng Miao’s hesitation.
His thoughts raced as he tried to come up with something to say, some way to catch Cheng Miao off guard and seize the dagger.
How dare she treat him this way? He would make her regret it!
Unfortunately, before he could do anything, he saw Qiudong, whom his subordinates should have dealt with, slowly walking toward him.
The necks of his heavily muscled bodyguards were twisted at impossible angles to their bodies.
Had this man silently disposed of so many people before anyone even noticed?!
Cold sweat trickled down the president’s forehead. The handsome face of the man before him was utterly expressionless, like an exquisite mask devoid of all human emotion, making him even more terrifying.
Qiudong walked over to the president and ignored the man, who had already begun to tremble. He took the dagger from Cheng Miao with one hand, while the other, carrying a cool fragrance, covered her eyes.
“Don’t look.”
