Chapter 2
They gave me a sedative. I had barely drifted into a haze before someone shook me violently awake.
My mother glared at me, her face twisted with rage.
“What is wrong with you? You split your brother’s head open and broke your sister’s arm. Are you going to kill me next? Why don’t you just die?”
My heart ached for a moment, but the pain quickly went numb.
My death was probably something she had wished for over many years.
She had never said it aloud before. Today, her fury finally brought it out.
She paused, perhaps regretting the cruelty of her words, but then she began wailing even harder than I had, sobbing until tears and mucus streamed down her face.
What was she crying for?
Her fate, perhaps.
Heaven had given her a healthy, obedient son and daughter. Why had it burdened her with one sickly child too?
I had made her life miserable.
But what had I done wrong?
I laughed. As I did, tears began sliding down my cheeks of their own accord.
“Mom, I’ll say it again. Ye Xiaoxiao schemed against me and stole my luck. When all of you become as unlucky as I am one day, you’ll finally understand what I’ve suffered.”
“Nonsense! What kind of lunacy is that? Fortune isn’t something another person can simply steal. If you’re mentally ill, go see a psychiatrist and stop spouting rubbish.”
My father glared at me and delivered his verdict with absolute certainty.
He was dressed in an expensive new outfit and carried himself like an important man.
After Ye Xiaoxiao won the lottery, she gave our parents several hundred thousand yuan and kept several million for herself. My father was immensely proud of her and would tolerate no one speaking ill of her.
I scoffed. “Then consider me insane. An insane person isn’t criminally responsible for murder, right?”
My sinister gaze swept over the ashen-faced Ye Mingchen before settling on the sniffling Ye Xiaoxiao and her arm in a sling.
Ye Xiaoxiao froze in terror.
Inside her head, she frantically pestered the Koi System.
“What is going on? Why is she acting like a psychopath today?”
The Koi System replied coldly, “I warned you long ago not to shear the same sheep over and over. Ye Shengsheng’s fortune has fallen to its absolute limit. It is perfectly natural that she would become suspicious. Do you want to choose someone else?”
“No! She scratched my face and broke my arm. Why should I change targets?”
“If this continues, she may die.”
“Then what am I supposed to do? Your fortune-transfer target has to meet an intimacy threshold. If I don’t choose her, am I supposed to choose Mom, Dad, my brother, or my boyfriend? They’re so good to me. How could I do that to them?”
Now I understood.
The Koi System was a cruel game. It forced Ye Xiaoxiao to rank the important people in her life, and I had come last.
So abandoning me had never hurt her at all.
I looked at her.
“Ye Xiaoxiao, was I not good to you? When Mom and Dad were going to punish you, I stood in front of you. When you dirtied our brother’s pencil case, I cleaned it for you. When classmates bullied you, I fought them back. When you fell into the river, I risked my life to save you. What did I ever do to deserve this from you?”
Her face went deathly pale. She stammered, “You did help me many times, but I don’t understand what you’re talking about.”
“Enough! Ye Shengsheng, you’re behaving like a mad dog, biting everyone you see. You’re just jealous of Xiaoxiao. I wish she were my only sister. I wish you had never been born.” A vicious expression crossed Ye Mingchen’s handsome face. He spoke through clenched teeth, as if his hatred for me had reached its limit.
Afterward, he seemed to realize he had gone too far and glanced at our parents. Their faces were grim, but neither contradicted him.
Relief crossed his face. He stared at me with cold eyes and said flatly, “Let’s sever all ties. From now on, you have nothing to do with our family.”
My gaze moved from face to face. Their expressions differed, but by silent agreement, not one of them objected.
I lowered my eyes to hide the tears gathering at their corners and whispered a single word.
“Fine.”
