Chapter 1

Today, Xue Meng’s divorce from Xie Yang became official.

To celebrate her fresh start, she threw a party and invited a lot of friends.

Zhou Yuxing and I were among them.

Zhou Yuxing had been her lawyer.

Without him, her case against Xie Yang would never have been settled so quickly, nor would she have received such a large share of their assets.

So her first toast was to Zhou Yuxing.

“Zhou Yuxing, thank you. I won’t make a speech. Here’s to you.”

But Zhou Yuxing didn’t seem happy. He kept frowning.

“I’ve taken some medicine. I can’t drink,” he said.

I gave him a puzzled look.

I kept all the medicines at home, and whenever Zhou Yuxing felt unwell, he had to ask me to find them for him.

I was certain he hadn’t taken anything.

I couldn’t understand why he would say that.

Xue Meng’s hand stiffened around her glass. She stood there awkwardly.

Her gaze was timid. “Th-then don’t. I’ll drink mine!”

Zhou Yuxing’s frown deepened. When Xue Meng drained her glass, his eyes darkened.

Xue Meng really was happy today.

In the nearly six months since Xie Yang’s affair came to light, she had smiled less and less.

Today, for once, her face was relaxed.

She moved among her friends, laughing and teasing, as lively as a lark.

Zhou Yuxing seemed distracted.

He still put food in my bowl out of habit, though his eyes kept following something.

Then he gave me a piece of beef.

I sighed, suddenly weary.

I was allergic to beef. Zhou Yuxing knew that. He worried about it even more than I did.

Whenever we ate out, he reminded me not to give in to temptation.

This was the first time he had simply dropped a piece of beef into my bowl.

I opened my mouth to say something, but he stood up abruptly. “I’m going to the restroom.”

Before I could react, he had left the private dining room.

“Where’s Xue Meng?” I asked the friend beside me.

“She just went out. To the restroom, I suppose! Speaking of which, where’s your husband?”

I pressed my lips together and stood.

“Where are you going?”

“Out for some air.”

There was a window at the end of the corridor. I really did want some air. I hadn’t intended to catch them together, and I hadn’t imagined I would.

Just around the corner, Xue Meng was leaning weakly against Zhou Yuxing’s chest.

He took some medicine from his pocket and gave it to her, then unscrewed a bottle of water and held it to her lips, letting her sip a little at a time.

He put on a stern face and pretended to be angry. “Serves you right!”

She gave him a reproachful look. “How could you? You embarrassed me in front of everyone. I wanted to die!”

Zhou Yuxing glared at her.

“Embarrassed you? If I indulged you any more, you’d be impossible! Have you forgotten you have gastroenteritis?”

Xue Meng smiled. “I’m fine!”

Zhou Yuxing snorted and let go of her.

“Fine. You’re fine! I’ll be damned if I bother with you again!”

Xue Meng caught his arm and coaxed him softly.

“All right, all right. I know you’re worried about me!

“Let’s go back before Shuning starts to worry.”
