Chapter 27
Zhang Man sent me a video. She said she was in the car with two burly guys, staking out Xu Zhi, ready to teach him a lesson-and ended up seeing something strange.
“There’s someone else following him!”
Zhang Man said she’d found out that Xu Zhi liked night fishing. She’d arranged for two buddies to rough him up by the remote riverbank so it would all happen quietly, without anyone knowing.
But while they were lying in wait, she saw a sneaky figure trailing behind Xu Zhi.
“Look!”
Through the telephoto lens, I saw a dark figure slinking along in Xu Zhi’s wake. The person was wrapped up from head to toe, wearing a mask and a baseball cap, but I still recognized him at a glance.
“It’s Suhang!”
Right then, Zhang Man suddenly hissed, “Is he out of his mind?”
“What’s wrong?”
“I think he’s holding a knife!”
Suhang wants to kill someone?
“Stop him! You have to stop him! I’m coming over right now!”
I kept telling Zhang Man what to do while I grabbed my things and rushed out the door.
Just as Suhang raised the knife, the two big guys lunged out and tackled him to the ground.
Xu Zhi was fishing by the river, completely absorbed, when three black shapes suddenly exploded into a fight by the bushes behind him. He let out a high-pitched scream, flung his rod straight into the water, and scrambled away on hands and knees.
By the time I rushed over, Suhang was sitting in the car, looking utterly wronged. The usually refined man in gold-rimmed glasses was now filthy and disheveled, covered in mud, his glasses nowhere to be seen. He was in a sorry state.
I’d never seen him like this before.
“What were you doing? Trying to kill someone?” Zhang Man was scolding him beside the car. “Let me tell you, if Lili hadn’t told me to stop you today, I wouldn’t have bothered. I’d have just let you go kill him. Then you could pay with your life. You scumbags killing each other-now that would make me happy. Best if you all just died…”
Suhang hung his head like his soul had left his body and didn’t say a word.
Zhang Man was still cursing when she spotted me and lit up. “Boss, I caught this guy for you!”
Suhang looked over at me. His eyes were bloodshot, his face haggard. “Honey…”
He called to me softly, then immediately bowed his head again, not daring to meet my gaze.
I kept my mouth shut and took him home. As soon as we stepped through the door, he dropped to his knees with a thud in front of me.
“Honey, I was wrong. I know I’m beyond forgiveness. Please, just give me one more chance. I’ll do anything for you, be your slave, your beast of burden-”
“Give you a chance? If you’d actually killed someone just now, you’d never have another chance in this life! You and your dad would end up meeting in prison, and he’d be the one seeing you off on your last journey!”
“I…” His shoulders trembled, as if the fear was finally catching up with him.
