Chapter 25
Back home, I said to Suhang, “Don’t tell my parents about the pregnancy yet. Let’s wait until we’re past the first three risky months, okay?”
“Okay, whatever you say! I’ll take care of you, and we can hire an auntie to help…” His eyes were shining as he carefully stroked my lower abdomen. “Baby, we’re going to have a child… They’re definitely going to be as good-looking as you are! Later we can have another one. If we could have a boy and a girl, that’d be perfect! Then we’d be a family of four-that’d be so great…”
“Is that really what you want?” I cut him off.
“Of course!” He answered without hesitation.
I locked my gaze on his eyes. “The doctor said I got pregnant in mid-June. I did the math-it should’ve been that night we got drunk.”
His brows furrowed for the briefest moment before he smoothed them out and gave me a gentle smile. “Then the baby’s fifty days along now.”
I felt like I couldn’t see through this man at all.
I wanted to slice open his chest, take out his heart, and see what color it really was.
I secretly booked an abortion and asked Bai Zifan to sign the consent forms as the child’s father.
On the day of the procedure, Bai Zifan kept hesitating. “Lili, are you really sure about this?”
“You just need to sign,” I cut him off.
I didn’t expect Suhang to suddenly rush into the hospital, panting, his face deathly pale and full of confusion. “Baby, wait, wh-why?”
I turned on Bai Zifan in fury. “How did he find out? Why is he here?”
Bai Zifan stood between us, looking embarrassed. “I… still think you two should talk it over as husband and wife.”
“You don’t understand anything!” Bitter disappointment washed over me. I’d thought Bai Zifan was someone I could trust. I never expected him to do this. All the grievance and anger I’d been holding in finally exploded as I screamed, “Suhang, drop the act! You know damn well this child isn’t yours! What are you trying to do? Are you even human?”
The hospital corridor went dead silent. Every pair of eyes turned to us.
Bai Zifan stared at me, stunned. “What… do you mean?”
Suhang looked as if he’d been struck by lightning, yet he still tried to hold himself together. “Baby, is there some kind of misunderstanding?”
“Enough!” I spun around and ran.
Suhang started to chase after me, but Bai Zifan stopped him. “She’s really emotional right now. Let her calm down. I’ll get in touch with you later.”
I got into Bai Zifan’s car. In the rearview mirror, Suhang stood frozen like a statue, shrinking smaller and smaller until he was nothing but a blurry black dot.
