Chapter 3

I pondered for a long time.

Finally, I took out my phone and dialed a friend in the real estate industry.

The next day, Xin Nan found her way to my office.

“Teacher, was it you?”

I feigned ignorance and asked her, “What are you talking about?”

Xin Nan took a deep breath.

“My fiancé… he doesn’t have much talent. It’s impossible for someone to proactively offer him a construction project.”

“I’ve never believed in pie falling from the sky. So, Teacher, what is your goal?”

I reached out and pointed behind Xin Nan.

Xin Nan turned her head. Her fiancé was smiling broadly.

I could feel Xin Nan trembling all over, utterly terrified.

I stepped forward and pulled her into an embrace.

“Don’t be afraid. The glass is one-way; people outside can’t see in.”

“But look at how happy your fiancé is. Do you have the heart to shatter his beautiful dream?”

After I finished speaking, I pressed Xin Nan against the glass, forcing her to look at her fiancé’s smile. Then, I reached my hand toward her chest.

The most frightening thing for a person is to develop a taste for something forbidden. I could feel myself becoming somewhat obsessed with Xin Nan.

The first person to notice my abnormal behavior was my wife.

She held up my shirt, which was stained with a lipstick print, and questioned me.

“Jiang Sheng, this was an accident, right?”

I could see the pleading in her eyes. She was begging me to lie to her.

Why bother?

Coming to me with a question when she already had the answer, yet hoping for a denial.

I calmly took the shirt from her.

“No, Ah Yu. As you can see, I’m having an affair.”

My wife’s entire body shook.

“But… why?”

Why?

My thoughts drifted back to that stifling summer day.

Back then, I was just an ordinary lecturer at a university.

I had made my way from a small mountain village to the big city, step by step.

In our small town, I was called a genius, but it wasn’t until I reached City A that I realized the truth.

Geniuses in this world are a dime a dozen, as numerous as the stars in the sky.

I wasn’t among the top tier of excellence, nor did I have a deep family background.

Trying to get ahead was simply too difficult.

The day before the professional rankings were to be decided was also the eve of my total despair, just as I had finally figured out the rules of society.

My wife said she had to work overtime that night and told me to go home first.

However, the President told me to wait for him in the office next to his.

He said he had something to discuss with me.

I originally thought the President wanted money from me to buy a spot in the rankings.

I was at a loss because I had no money.

But I didn’t expect that after waiting for only a short while…

I saw my wife, Xin Yu, enter the President’s office.

The office was very large.

There was a pane of glass in the middle.

At the time, I didn’t know what one-way glass was.

I only knew that my wife looked in my direction. I stood up, wanting to greet her, but she didn’t seem to see me.

The President made a shushing gesture at me.

Then, from behind, he slowly took off my wife’s clothes.

He pressed my wife against the glass and took possession of her.

I could clearly see that Ah Yu’s face was covered in tears.

I could feel her reluctance.

But throughout the entire process, she didn’t offer the slightest resistance.

She was unwilling, but she was voluntary.

The President stared fixedly at the glass.

I knew it-he was looking at me.

Even if he couldn’t see me, I knew he was looking at me.

I hesitated for a long time, but in the end, I didn’t go to stop it.

It’s too hard to become one of the elite, and this was my tribute.

The President wasn’t a responsible man, but he needed an obedient dog.

And so, on that sweltering afternoon, I buried my expectations for marriage.

In exchange, I gained a broad and smooth path forward.

Who is to say that what I am doing to Xin Nan now isn’t a way of redeeming my younger self?
