Chapter 3
Chapter 3
The Driver thought back for a moment and said stiffly, “So what? Maybe my buddy just got cold out in the wild!”
“Isn’t it normal for your teeth to chatter when you’re cold?”
I felt helpless.
“Big brother, if you don’t believe me, then nothing I say will matter. Why don’t you give him a video call and see for yourself?”
“A dead person is a dead person, after all. You can always tell the difference from the living.”
The Driver didn’t say anything. The cigarette in his hand remained still for a long while before he suddenly jerked the steering wheel and pulled over to the side of the road.
He pulled a length of rope from the back and tied my hands together.
Then, he placed a video call to Ah Chen.
“Beep- Beep-”
The call connected, and the screen lit up.
Ah Chen’s dark, blood-stained face filled the screen. His expression was natural, and his movements weren’t stiff.
“Old Zhang, what the hell are you doing? You’re still not here after all this time. The guy at the top won’t hand over the money if he doesn’t see the goods.”
He deliberately tilted the screen toward me so I could see more clearly.
“I just ran into a Little Charlatan who insists you’re dead. It’s hilarious, hahahaha.”
“Bullshit! I’m alive and well. How dare she curse me? Just wait, I’ll make her wish she were dead.”
Old Zhang hung up the phone and let out a sigh of relief.
He stepped on the gas with a smug look on his face. “Wasting my time bickering… I must have been possessed to let a charlatan scare me like that.”
He extinguished his cigarette on my pants. “Come on, tell me again-can a dead person have a rosy complexion and flexible expressions?”
I didn’t answer him.
Staring at the hole burned into my pants, I said coldly, “He’s already dead.”
“And you’re next.”
The car screeched to a sudden halt.
With my hands bound, I couldn’t maintain my balance, and my body slammed uncontrollably into the dashboard.
“Dammit! You damn charlatan, are you ever going to shut up? Now you’re cursing me too!”
Old Zhang let out a roar of fury, crushed his cigarette butt, and swung a fist toward my face.
The sound of the wind whistling past was piercing.
I leaned back slightly, neither dodging nor flinching, and said calmly, “Your buddy touched a corpse a week ago.”
Old Zhang’s fist stopped three inches from my face.
The way he looked at me was cold, as if he were no longer looking at a living being.
“Young lady, I don’t care where you got your information, but knowing too much isn’t a good thing.”
I smiled, unhurried.
“You stopped the car, didn’t you? That means you still believe me a little.”
“Every trade has its rules. You’re involved in an illicit business, yet you didn’t follow the rules or show the proper respect.”
“Take the wealth without harming the tomb’s master, light three sticks of incense, and kowtow to the eight directions. Did you do any of that?”
Old Zhang seemed to recall something, and his face grew darker and darker.
I shifted my body upright and gestured toward his phone with my chin. “Didn’t you accidentally take a screenshot just now?”
“Take another close look. Is he still a living person?”
