Chapter 2

Zhou Xun arrived soon after.

Wu Siyin first called out softly, “Boss,” then bit her lower lip and lowered her eyes to stare at her shoes, looking for all the world like a poor little thing who had just been bullied.

“There’s no need to make things difficult for a young girl.”

Zhou Xun looked at me with a faint frown, his tone as flat as if he were discussing the weather.

Mm. I knew this scene very well.

Before Zhou Xun and I divorced.

He had said things like that to me many times.

We were married for three years.

After he was promoted to marketing director, his relationship with his assistant, Wu Siyin, became increasingly ambiguous.

I asked him to transfer her away.

He thought I was old-fashioned and ridiculous.

“You sit in the office all day and never go anywhere. People in the Marketing Department entertain clients outside and look out for each other. That’s perfectly normal. You don’t have to pick on a young girl, do you?”

That time, he got drunk outside. I drove over to pick him up and take him home, and Wu Siyin took it upon herself to look after him in the back seat.

During the drive, she suddenly let out a short little “ah.” When she got out of the car, I saw that her short skirt had ridden up, exposing a glaring expanse of pale skin.

I am a low-energy person.

I was too lazy to catch him cheating, too lazy to argue. I simply asked for a divorce.

Zhou Xun’s attitude was scornful.

“Cheng Ling, if you think you can play hard to get and manipulate me with this retreat-to-advance trick, you’ve chosen the wrong method. I, Zhou Xun, have always responded to softness, not threats.”

“You’re a divorced woman in your thirties, stiff and boring. If you can find a man with even half my qualifications, I’ll kneel for you at the company entrance!”

We completed the divorce procedures very quickly.

Unfortunately, we worked at the same company.

We still ran into each other everywhere.

He and Wu Siyin came and went together. He would often show concern for her right in front of me on purpose, stepping in for her at every turn, all under the excuse of: “Of course I have to protect the people in my department.”

I knew my colleagues said in private that I was really good at putting up with things.

That I still hadn’t resigned despite all this.

If it had been me a few years ago, I really would have found it humiliating and disgusting. Out of sight, out of mind-I would have resigned and left.

But I was thirty-three now.

Age had given me the strength and confidence I ought to have.

I had worked so hard to become head of the Finance Department. Why should I resign?

Besides, they were the ones who should be ashamed.

Not me.

At this moment,

Zhou Xun tilted his head slightly and looked at me, that familiar mocking smile hanging at the corner of his mouth.

“What’s between us is between us. There’s no point constantly dragging some young girl into it and making things hard for her. Don’t you think?”

Expressionless, I said, “Following the rules is making things hard for her? Was the company’s financial system established just to make things hard for her? Director Zhou, is your brain not working properly?”

He stared at me for a few seconds, then suddenly laughed.

“Fine. Then at tomorrow’s meeting, we’ll let the new Chairman decide. But Cheng Ling…” He lowered his voice, his tone carrying the pleasure of someone certain of victory.

“Using this kind of tactic to provoke me into changing my mind-honestly, it’s a little beneath you.”

The new boss was taking over, and I stood in the hallway with a group of young women to welcome him.

He stopped in front of me and said in a low voice,

“I want to go...
