With a face that said I had lost all will to live, I followed Lu Tinglan to register and get my blood drawn.

While he went to pay, I quietly negotiated with the doctor.

“If I hadn’t caught you, were you planning to pretend you had stomach cancer and make our whole family feel sorry for you?”

Jiang Yan looked down at me from above.

His eyes glittered with a mocking look that said he had seen through everything.

Was this the family love I had spent so long chasing?

I swallowed the bloody taste in my throat and smiled without explaining.

“Are you done? If you are, get lost.”

Jiang Yan frowned, as if he had never heard me speak to him in that tone before.

He grabbed my arm.

“I don’t care what tantrum you’re throwing. Today is Mumu’s birthday. Come with me to pick out a cake, then go home for dinner!”

The year I was brought back to the Jiang family, everyone hated me. Only Jiang Yan asked me what color I wanted for my birthday cake.

I thought he was different.

Only later did I find out that cake was for Jiang Mu.

Jiang Mu had been dead for ten years, but the family still remembered every date connected to him.

His birthday, his death anniversary, his first day of elementary school, the first time he got full marks…

Every single time in those ten years, I gambled.

I gambled that after Jiang Yan finished choosing a cake for Jiang Mu, he would suddenly remember that today was my birthday too.

I didn’t need some grand ceremony. I didn’t need a pretty cake. I didn’t even need him to take me to Los Angeles to watch the NBA.

One “happy birthday” would have been enough.

But there was nothing.

I didn’t want to be Jiang Mu’s substitute anymore.

“Who the hell wants to eat that dinner? Disgusting.”

“Jiang Yao, what kind of attitude is that? Have you lost your mind?”

“This kind of attitude. If you don’t like it, get lost.”

Jiang Yan flew into a rage and raised his hand to slap me.

But the instant it was about to fall, Lu Tinglan seized his wrist in a crushing grip.

“He told you to get lost. Are you deaf?”
