Chapter 5
Chapter 5
I took two steps back until my back pressed against the sink, watching Lu He warily.
“Xiao Nuo, Xu Qing might be a very dangerous person. We need a weapon for self-defense.”
He handed the knife to me.
I took it and gripped it tightly. “Lu He, did you once have a twin brother?”
Lu He’s expression shifted for a fleeting second.
His eyes flickered. “Xiao Nuo, who told you that?”
My heart sank.
“Why did you never tell me?”
Lu He stared at me without saying a word.
I had the feeling he was observing my reaction.
After a long silence, Lu He let out a soft sigh.
“Xiao Nuo, I’ve never wanted to tell you about this because it’s a scar for me.”
“My brother was a sociopath-a lunatic. He did a lot of crazy, cruel things.”
“But on the night of the fire, he saved me. He shielded me with his own body. He ended up a charred corpse.”
“I always hated him, I was terrified of him, but in the end, he was the one who gave his life to save mine.”
“That’s why, Xiao Nuo, I didn’t want to bring up the past.”
Lu He spoke with a heavy expression.
“Then what about the insurance you bought for me? Why didn’t you tell me about that either?”
I stared intently into Lu He’s eyes.
A flicker of surprise crossed his face, followed by a helpless look. “Xu Qing told you, didn’t she?”
“I have a junior from school that I’m very close with-you’ve met him before, the one who seems a bit dim-witted. He recently started selling insurance, and I wanted to help him out, so I bought two policies from him.”
“I didn’t just buy one for you; I bought one for myself as well.”
He showed me his chat logs with the junior.
Sure enough, Lu He had bought a policy for himself too.
Confusion began to swirl in my mind.
Lu He and I had been together for two years, and his care for me could only be described as meticulous.
My relationship with my biological family was mediocre at best; it was Lu He and Xu Qing who had filled that void.
I started to doubt myself.
Could these two people, who treated me so well, really be my killers?
What if I really had just accidentally fallen off the building?
Maybe they just couldn’t accept that reality.
At that moment, Lu He grabbed my hand.
“Xiao Nuo, Xu Qing has been trying to drive a wedge between us. I feel very weak right now; there must have been something wrong with that bottle of water.”
“Regarding that kidnapping case from years ago, I specifically asked a classmate of mine who is a police officer. Back then, when the police arrived, Xu Qing was the only one at the scene. The woman who kidnapped her had vanished.”
“The police asked Xu Qing many questions, but she couldn’t answer any of them-including the woman’s whereabouts. Xu Qing had even forgotten her own parents.”
“It was like she had amnesia and couldn’t remember anything. But don’t you find it strange? The way she looks when she smiles… she looks exactly like that kidnapper who disappeared.”
“And besides her age, Xu Qing’s height and build are very similar to that kidnapper’s.”
Lu He spoke with a grim expression.
Cold sweat broke out across my back.
Just then, my phone rang again.
It was a call from the future Lu He.
I glanced at Lu He, but I answered the phone right in front of him anyway.
“Xiao Nuo, I finally got through again. It’s 10:30 now. In a few seconds, there will be a loud crash downstairs. For your safety, I’m going to go down alone to check it out.”
“You must not let me go downstairs! You have to keep me by your side!”
Suddenly, the call cut off.
This time, it had only lasted thirty seconds.
And it was Lu He who had hung up first.
It was as if he had encountered some sudden emergency on the other end.
[Call count: 2]
At that exact moment, a loud crash echoed from downstairs.
It sounded like something heavy had hit the ground.
Lu He frowned. “Xiao Nuo, I’m going to go take a look.”
I blurted out, “Don’t go!”
But it was too late.
Lu He had already run out.
In my panic, my phone slipped and hit the floor.
I leaned over to pick it up.
The screen was on the camera interface.
I must have accidentally triggered the shutter when it fell.
Suddenly, I noticed a new photo in the gallery.
The timestamp was from just a few seconds ago.
Trembling, I tapped on the photo.
The image was very blurry.
But I could still make out someone hiding under the bed.
It was Xu Qing.
Her face was obscured by the shadows, but I could still see her eyes. She was staring fixedly at me.
Xu Qing was currently hiding under the bed.

In the dead of night, I received a phone call. The caller ID showed it was my husband. With a voice of utmost gravity, he told me that I would die at two o’clock in the morning.
But...
