Chapter 2

Shen Wu thought she would scream, or perhaps pass out instantly.

But what actually happened was that every light on the entire hospital floor went out at once.

In the darkness, the sound of footsteps echoed through the corridor, one after another, as light as countless people walking barefoot on water. Wen Jin grabbed her wrist, dragging her into the deepest part of the anatomy lab. With a back-kick, he overturned a metal cart to block the door.

“Don’t make a sound,” he whispered.

Shen Wu was pressed against the corner by him. Her nose was filled with the cold, faint scent of cedarwood on his body, mixed with the lingering smell of blood. She could feel that he had no heartbeat and no body temperature, yet the hand holding her was terrifyingly steady.

Soon, the sound of nails scraping against the iron door came from outside, one stroke at a time, as if testing for the location of prey.

“Is it… the same kind of monster from before?” Shen Wu’s lips were pale.

“A low-tier feral,” Wen Jin said, his tone as casual as if he were discussing the weather while he tilted his head to listen to the movement outside. “Someone let them in on purpose. They’ll go into a frenzy if they smell your blood.”

“Why me?”

Wen Jin fell silent for a moment, a deep, dark gloom flickering in his eyes. “Because your blood can make us live, and it can make us die.”

The door was finally burst open.

Three distorted figures lunged in almost simultaneously. Wen Jin pulled her behind him and reached up to rip off the silver cross pendant at his chest, throwing it like a flicked blade. A silver light pierced the forehead of the foremost monster, and its flesh immediately began to sizzle and burn. However, the remaining two were already upon them. One even leaped directly onto the ceiling, lunging down at Shen Wu from an inverted position.

Shen Wu instinctively grabbed a nearby stainless steel tray and threw it. She missed, and instead, her wrist was slashed by the creature.

The moment fresh blood welled out, the entire room fell silent.

As if smelling poison, or perhaps a miracle, the two monsters’ movements became even more frenzied. The crimson in Wen Jin’s eyes surged violently. He shoved Shen Wu into the gap between the cold storage units behind him, looking as though he had completely released his final restraint.

When he looked up, his pupils were already blood-red.

In the next ten seconds, Shen Wu truly realized for the first time that the word ‘vampire’ was not just a legend.

Bones were crushed and blood splattered against the white walls in movements too fast to see. Wen Jin pinned the last monster against the wall and tore its throat out with his teeth. When the anatomy lab finally fell silent, he stood in the center of the corpses with his back to her, his shoulders pulled so taut they looked like they might snap at any second.

“Wen Jin?” Shen Wu called out softly.

He did not turn around.

“Don’t come over here,” his voice was incredibly hoarse. “Right now, I really want to bite you.”

Shen Wu’s logic told her she should run, but she saw his hand hanging at his side trembling. It wasn’t the excitement of a hunter seeing prey; it was more like someone who had been drowning for too long finally catching the scent of the shore.

She covered her bleeding wrist and forced herself to ask, “If you want to hurt me, why did you save me just now?”

Wen Jin finally turned around, the crimson in his eyes slowly receding back to black.

“Because I’ve been looking for you for a hundred and seventy years,” he said. “And it wasn’t so someone else could eat you first.”
