Chapter 4

By the time Shen Peizhi finished her shower, she smelled exactly like me.

The fruit she had left on the kitchen countertop was already cut and arranged on a plate. Even my favorite Shine Muscat grapes had been peeled and prepared.

Without a doubt, it was Lu Yanchen’s doing.

But I would never get to eat it again.

Lu Yanchen sat on the sofa with his eyes closed, his long, luxuriant lashes veiling all the emotions in his eyes.

Shen Peizhi picked up the fruit plate and walked over to him.

“Headache acting up again?” She placed her hand on his forehead and asked softly.

“Not too bad,” Lu Yanchen answered in a low murmur.

Lu Yanchen kept his feelings to himself. He never told anyone about the pain he was in.

In the past, I would have carefully massaged him until he pulled my hand down and pressed a kiss to the back of it.

Shen Peizhi only knew Lu Yanchen suffered from migraines; she had no idea what I used to do for him.

So, she calmly withdrew her hand and then skewered a piece of apple, bringing it to Lu Yanchen’s lips.

“Husband, have some fruit,” she said with a charming smile.

Lu Yanchen opened his eyes and gazed at her silently.

“What are you looking at?” She met his gaze, puzzled.

Lu Yanchen shook his head slightly. “I’ve already brushed my teeth. You eat it.”

“Oh.” Shen Peizhi sat down beside him and started eating by herself.

After eating for a while, a thought seemed to strike her. She held a grape between her lips, half-knelt on the sofa, and leaned toward Lu Yanchen’s mouth.

As their lips met, Lu Yanchen’s brow twitched almost imperceptibly.

“Open up,” she said, pulling back slightly, her words muffled.

Lu Yanchen did not move. His eyes, deep and dark as obsidian, lowered as if examining whether the person inside this shell was still the one he knew.

He never opened his mouth.

Shen Peizhi, finding her advance rebuffed, tossed the fruit plate aside in annoyance and went into the bedroom.

Lu Yanchen sat alone on the sofa for a long time before he, too, entered the bedroom.

But the moment he got into bed, Shen Peizhi snuggled up to him clingily.

“Husband, every moment of this spring night is worth a thousand pieces of gold…” Her tone was soft and coy, full of implication.

“I’m tired. Let’s sleep early,” Lu Yanchen said. With that, he lay down under the covers and closed his eyes.

Watching Shen Peizhi’s frustrated expression, I laughed out loud.

She was using my identity to get close to Lu Yanchen, yet she had no idea that what Lu Yanchen loved most was when I called him “Ah Chen.”

Lu Yanchen was not a man of strong carnal desire, but he was utterly defenseless against the name “Ah Chen.”

If she had just leaned close to his ear and called him “Ah Chen,” Lu Yanchen would have given his life for her.

Too bad she didn’t know.

She always said Lu Yanchen was of noble birth, not someone a cheap little country slut like me could ever dream of.

But she wanted to use her old tricks to force a fait accompli on Lu Yanchen.

As things stood, it looked like she still had many hurdles to overcome.

Once she realized she could never win Lu Yanchen over, would she resort to her old gambit and suggest “sharing” Lu Yanchen with me?

But I was already stone cold.

What would her reaction be when she saw my corpse?

I rested my chin on my hand and thought it over.

Probably very interesting.

After all, between her innocence and being Mrs. Lu, she could only choose one.

If she chose innocence, she would have to confess everything she had done in the past and become a laughingstock in everyone’s eyes.

If she wanted to be Mrs. Lu, she would have to completely erase my existence.

But in today’s society governed by law, a delicate woman like her who couldn’t even truss a chicken-“destroying all traces of a body” would be a massive undertaking…

The wedding bed was wide. I lay down in Lu Yanchen’s arms, smiling as I closed my eyes.

From today onward, I no longer have to come and go at Shen Peizhi’s beck and call as I did in the past.

Because I am dead now…
