Chapter 2
Chapter 2
Sunshine Orphanage really was huge.
On my way in, I passed a rehabilitation center, a cafeteria, a power distribution room, and a security office. When we entered the children’s residence, the dim lobby echoed with the sound of children laughing and playing.
Staring at the pitch-black back of the head in front of me, I asked carefully, “Boss, may I ask your name?”
“Pei. Pei Yu.”
“Oh, okay. My surname is Su. Su Lingxue.”
After only a few more steps, he pushed open a door. “I’m only giving you a chance. Whether you can become a caregiver depends on whether the children accept you.”
“Understood, Director Pei.”
Inside the room, a round-faced little boy was sitting on the bed playing with a ball. Pei Yu knocked on the door, his voice cool. “Xiaomi, this is the new caregiver.”
“Tonight, she’ll be the one putting you to bed.”
The boy glanced at me, completely unmoved.
But as soon as Pei Yu left, his mouth turned down and he looked at me pitifully. “Pretty big sister, Xiaomi doesn’t want to sleep yet!”
“Why not?”
The little boy looked around. I noticed his face was deathly pale, and his voice was filled with fear. “Because…”
“There’s a scary noise under the bed!”
I understood then that this mischievous child was the real test, so I reached out and patted his head.
“It’s okay. I’ll take a look for you.”
As I spoke, I turned on my phone’s flashlight, crouched down, and looked under the bed.
In the bright beam of light, an identical little pale face appeared, filled with the same terror. The little boy was curled up beneath the bed, his voice as thin as a mosquito’s buzz. “Big sister…”
“The one on the bed… isn’t me…”
When it was all over, I closed the door behind me and stepped out.
At the far end of the hallway, someone was standing there, merged almost completely with the thick darkness.
I called out, “Director Pei!”
“Mm.”
The man walked over to me. “He’s asleep?”
“Yes.”
“Good. You’re hired.”
As he spoke, he took a black card from his pocket. “This is your employee card.”
“Thank you, thank you!”
I was just getting excited when I heard the man say faintly, “By the way, did you not notice anything wrong?”
“Wrong?”
Thinking back to what had happened just now, I had indeed been a little startled at first, but I quickly calmed down.
After that, under the astonished gazes of the two children, I picked one up in each hand and neatly tucked them both under the blanket. “So what if you’re twins?”
“Children aren’t allowed to be naughty! Go to sleep right now!”
Remembering the unwilling, resentful looks the two little boys had given me, I couldn’t help finding it funny.
“It was fine. The kids were very well behaved.”
“…”
“Although that bed did seem a little narrow.”
After hearing the conclusion I had so thoughtfully arrived at, Pei Yu explained, “It’s a single bed. Of course it’s narrow.”
“?”
He didn’t give me any time to think it over before walking ahead. “You’re the first outside hire I’ve ever brought in.”
“Work hard. Don’t disappoint me.”
