Chapter 1

Hearing my words, Xie Yunji did not relax his furrowed brow.

It was as if I were a little liar, once again thinking of ways to play tricks and schemes.

I looked at Xie Yunji. He was dressed in immortal robes of black and white, which accentuated his tall, upright figure-cold, aloof, and indifferent.

The wedding robes he had been wearing moments ago were hand-sewn by me; they had taken over half a year to complete.

But when he was enlightened and ascended just now, those clothes shattered into the fragments that now littered the floor.

It wasn’t just his clothes. The wedding bed with its red curtains, the wooden table holding the large red candles, the door he had repaired yesterday, the parasol tree outside the courtyard-so many things had shattered across the ground.

Standing behind Xie Yunji were many people, all of them immortals from the upper realm.

The immortals exerted a faint pressure, forcing the mortal creatures to prostrate themselves across the ground.

Before he could speak, a fairy said airily, “Divine Lord Qingxuan, I’ve heard that mortals are the most calculating. Just a moment ago, she was making a life-and-death scene to keep you from leaving, yet suddenly she’s had a change of heart. Who’s to say she won’t secretly follow us the moment we step out the door?”

I remembered her; her name was Luo Cai.

Among the palace maids and fairies who had constantly bullied me in my past life, she had the most tricks.

Because her elder sister, Fairy Wuwang, had admired Xie Yunji and waited hundreds of years for him to return to his immortal position.

But no one expected that a lowly mortal like me would be so shameless.

I had clung to him desperately just to reach the Immortal Realm, occupying the status of Xie Yunji’s wife.

In my past life, I had indeed done exactly as she said; after they left, I followed them in secret.

As a result, I fell into danger several times, and Xie Yunji had to turn back to rescue me.

The first time he turned back, I asked him with tearful eyes, “Why are the immortals so cruel? To choose your wedding day to enlighten you… it’s truly too much.”

He said nothing, only lowering his head to heal my wounds.

The second time he turned back, I was even more determined: “We have performed the bows. You are my husband. I will go wherever you go. I won’t leave you even if I die.”

The third time, Xie Yunji had no choice but to feed me a Heart-Clearing Pill.

It was specially made for mortals entering the Immortal Realm; without this pill, a mortal would feel as if they were walking through purgatory.

I got my wish and followed Xie Yunji back to his Yunhua Hall, becoming a stain upon Divine Lord Qingxuan.

Later, during those hundreds of years, I spent my time waiting for Xie Yunji.

Waiting for him to be in a good mood and show enough mercy to spend a night with me.

Waiting for him to return from the lower realm and spare me a glance as he passed the hall.

Back then, after a night of reckless abandon, Xie Yunji would always look coldly at the marks on my body, a flash of disgust crossing his face.

I would quietly pull up my clothes and turn my back to him.

I knew he blamed me for ruining his pure cultivation and dragging him into desire.

If I hadn’t been so clingy, he wouldn’t have continued to mingle his flesh with a lowly mortal after becoming a god.

Gradually, he came less often. I would often sit on the threshold waiting for him, but I could never wait him out.

I waited and waited, until the swaying grass at the palace gates developed spiritual awareness, until the peeping peach blossoms took on human form, yet I still never saw Xie Yunji.

In Xiangyun Village, the old woman who sold tofu liked me, and the traveling merchant liked me; they always called me Miss Shao with a smile.

But in the Immortal Realm, once everyone was certain that Xie Yunji did not like me, they began to bully me.

“Truly shameless. Divine Lord Qingxuan is so noble and transcendent, yet a lowly mortal like her dares to have such delusions, clinging to him like a parasite.”

“Exactly. If you ask me, the Divine Lord should have simply killed his wife to prove his Dao back then. Such a grand opportunity was wasted for nothing.”

“It is strange, though. She’s just a mortal. If the Divine Lord truly wanted to discard her, there are ten thousand ways to do it. Yet now he can’t seem to get rid of her. Could she really have some incredible fox-like charms?”

They would intentionally conjure evil spirits to scare me or turn stones into my meals.

Unaware, I would take a heavy bite, leaving my mouth filled with blood.

I was often so terrified by their immortal arts that I buried myself under the covers, afraid to eat or sleep, because there would be terrifying things in my dreams as well.

I thought Xie Yunji didn’t know, so I went to his main hall to complain.

An immortal can cover a hundred miles in a single step, and the palaces were exceptionally far apart.

Just to find Xie Yunji to complain, I walked for two whole days.

I said so many things, but in the end, I only opened my mouth to show him a tooth with a missing corner.

“You know immortal arts, can you help me fix my tooth? It looks so ugly like this. If you just fix my tooth, I can handle the rest myself.”

In truth, I couldn’t handle it, but Xie Yunji wouldn’t help me anyway, so there was no point in saying it.

Xie Yunji reached out and pinched my chin. After a single glance, he asked, “Who gave you permission to enter the hall?”

I froze. He withdrew his hand.

“You are so stupid. After a hundred years in the Immortal Realm, you haven’t even learned a basic spell like this?”

I felt a bit sad. “I am a mortal, and you never taught me.”

He let out a sneer. “Now you know you’re a mortal? When you were hell-bent on coming to the Immortal Realm, why didn’t you remember you were a mortal?”

In a daze, I finally understood. Even after a hundred years, he still resented me.

When I stood at Reincarnation Cliff, I actually already knew that Fairy Wuwang was lying to me.

She said that Xie Yunji had been seriously injured while slaying demons in the mortal world and his immortal body was hidden.

I was his wife; only if I went down from there could I find him.

I think I just didn’t want to stay in the Immortal Realm anymore, and I didn’t want to wait for Xie Yunji anymore.

So, jumping anywhere was fine, as long as I could leave this place.

I also knew that Xie Yunji was actually in the Immortal Realm; he wasn’t injured.

I waited by the edge of Reincarnation Cliff for a long time. If Xie Yunji had come to see me, if he had stopped me even once, I wouldn’t have jumped.

But I waited until the Weaver Girl finished weaving the last of the rosy clouds, and Xie Yunji never came.

No one told me that when a mortal jumps from Reincarnation Cliff, there is no next life.

I also thought that my body and soul would be extinguished.

But as soon as I opened my eyes, I was back to this day.

That’s good. This time, Xie Yunji won’t have to be troubled.

And I will be free.
