The way she lowered her head and coughed made her look so frail. The tears clinging to her lashes made her look so pitiful.

Even as a woman, my heart ached at the sight.

A delicate woman like her only wanted to survive. What was wrong with that?

I looked at the old servant beside her, and in the end, I couldn’t bring myself to say a single word about running away.

The old nanny beside her jumped up at once.

Young Madam stared steadily at me for a while, then smiled.

Then she pointed toward the study next door. “It’s just that my husband…”

“My beautiful madam, you should sleep first. I’ll go meet my husband right now.”

I braced both hands on the armrests and looked him over from above.

Qin Zhongwen wasn’t afraid of me for any other reason.

Two years ago, he had watched me chop off someone’s fingers in front of him during the day, then run into me burying a body that same night.

What had I said back then?

I had said, “Get as far away as you can. If there’s a next time, you’ll be the one buried in there.”

I lowered my head and studied his face carefully, then chuckled.

“I was only scaring you. You’re my husband now. I won’t hurt you.”

I put on a troubled expression. “However, Young Madam said that from now on, everyone in this courtyard must listen to me.”

He sighed. “She couldn’t even hold out for a single day before having her authority seized?”

I sneered. “What are you rambling about? You too. From now on, you have to listen to me as well.”

As if giving up on any pointless resistance, he obediently answered, “All right.”
