Chapter 2

The bright light made the embroidery on Chi Heng’s clothes gleam, reeking of money.

Chi Heng shot them a cold glare as a warning.

The grating noise stopped, replaced by looks of amusement.

He toyed with the black card in his hand, a casual smile on his lips, as if mentioning an ordinary matter.

“Actually, I’m not poor.”

“On the contrary, I have a little money.”

“After seeing how things are in the circles, I kept it from you.”

Although I had known it already, when it was confirmed, a dull ache spread in my heart.

Chi Heng is much taller than me, and even at a moment like this he had no decorum, no apology, appearing aloof and arrogant.

“Let’s go abroad together.”

“Don’t bother with the postgraduate exam, it’s too tiring.”

I bit my lip and said nothing.

He leaned forward slightly and reached out to pinch my cheek.

“Are you too happy to speak?”

Why would he think I should be happy? He lied to me.

I didn’t get together with him for his money, so of course I wouldn’t forgive him because of it.

I smacked his hand away and stepped back.

“Forget it.”

“I came to break up with you.”

His smile froze suddenly.

I sniffled, held back the tears, and with determination I took out the bill and slammed it on the table.

The table was rock hard. It hurt my hand terribly. My eyes reddened even more.

“Pay me back the money I spent on you.”

“Then we’re even.”

Besides the money I gave him every month, I also paid for our dates. The bill was only sixteen thousand, not enough to buy his jacket, but it was money I had saved for a long time. My mother only allowed me to spend my living expenses on myself and forbade me from supporting others. I listened to half, so I got a part-time job to support him. Emotionally we can never be even. But at least I have to get the money back.

The private room fell silent.

The group of managers craned their necks, eyes wide as copper bells, probably not expecting me to treat Chi Heng like this-to treat such easily attainable wealth like this.

Someone whispered, “Dating a poor person is so much trouble. You have to get back even the expenses during the relationship. How much could it be? Chi Heng really needs to learn a lesson this time.”

Chi Heng merely glanced at the bill, then casually picked it up and tore it to shreds. The tiny bits of paper fluttered down.

I silently thought, it’s a good thing I have an electronic copy.

Through the bright light and the mist in my eyes, his face was pale, but his pupils were dark and deep.

“We’re even?”

“Fine.”

He didn’t transfer money to me. Instead, he took out a check from his wallet and signed it immediately. Like how I had thrown the bill, he slammed the check heavily on the table. He didn’t throw it straight, or perhaps it was intentional. The flimsy paper brushed the edge of the table and fell at my feet.

Chi Heng stared into my eyes, his gaze cold and his tone mocking.

“Didn’t you want money? Here.”

I stood rigidly in place. Even with my thick skin, I should have known he was trying to humiliate me with money.

I clenched the hem of my clothes, trembling uncontrollably, tears welling up in my eyes. As I lowered my head to wipe them, I suddenly saw the number clearly. Six zeros. Sixteen million.

In that instant, all the love, hate, resentment, and drama were set aside.

“Alright.”

I bent down, picked up the check, stuffed it into my pocket, and didn’t forget to thank him.

“Thanks.”

I ran out without looking back. Pushing the door open, shutting it, all in one fluid motion, fearing he might change his mind.

Chi Heng pretended to be poor and became my kept boyfriend.

Each month, I scraped together five hundred yuan from my living expenses to give him, and this went on for a year and a half.
