Chapter 4
The sudden sight of someone from my past left me dazed. I missed whatever Xu Lang said in my ear.
Until a fierce argument broke out at the entrance to the banquet hall.
The piano stopped.
Zhou Mingxi frowned. “What’s going on?”
The restaurant manager hurried over. “Miss Zhou, a young lady says she’s one of your guests and is insisting we let her in.”
“Does she have an invitation?”
“No. That’s why we stopped her.”
Only when Zhou Mingxi began to look displeased did Xu Lang remember Meng Yuan.
“Mingxi, she’s probably a friend of mine.”
He’d barely finished when Meng Yuan screamed through her tears.
“Don’t touch me!”
Xu Lang hurried over and opened the hall doors.
“What’s happened?”
Security guards were holding Meng Yuan back. She was extremely agitated.
Most of her delicate dress was soaked with sweat. Her hair stuck to her face, and her make-up was a disaster.
She’d come all this way looking like that. She must have felt very wronged indeed.
She bit her lip.
“If you didn’t want me here, why did you invite me?”
Xu Lang frowned. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Meng Yuan said,
“The driver never came.
“I waited at the bottom of the hill for half an hour. I called you both countless times, and neither of you answered.
“In the end, a kind person who lived nearby brought me up a side path.”
Her heels were muddy, and the backs of her feet had been rubbed raw.
“You’ve misunderstood,” I said gently.
Her voice rose sharply. “Misunderstood what? Su Ying, is it fun making a fool of me?”
“It really is a misunderstanding. Come with me, and I’ll explain everything. This is Miss Zhou’s party…”
I stepped forward as though to lead her away, but she slapped my hand aside.
“Explain it right here. Let’s hear what excuse you can come up with! If I let you drag me off, who knows what sneaky trick you’ll pull next!”
By now, Zhou Mingxi looked furious.
Xu Lang had to step in.
“I sent the driver. If he didn’t pick you up, that’s my responsibility. Why are you taking it out on Su Ying?”
“You arranged it yourself? How is that possible?”
Meng Yuan had assumed I’d interfered and never told the driver.
She hadn’t expected Xu Lang really did have to arrange it himself.
Because I didn’t have the driver’s contact details either.
Xu Lang had explained that his parents repeatedly insisted, for reasons of personal safety, that the driver’s number wasn’t to be given out lightly.
Besides, I’d sent her those messages in black and white. Why would I try anything that could so easily be checked?
I’d always lived by one rule:
Never send a message you wouldn’t want screenshotted.
Xu Lang lost patience.
“Meng Yuan. Apologise to Su Ying, then leave.”
She looked at me, bedraggled and at a loss.
I gave her a gentle smile and silently mouthed my answer.
“So much.”
Making a fool of you was so much fun.
