Chapter 2

I never thought of myself as Zhao Mosheng, and Chen Shu would never be He Yichen.

Back when we broke up, everyone thought I was the one who dumped Chen Shu, but he was the one who said the words.

To save myself a little face, I was too embarrassed to admit I’d been dumped, so I let the rumor stand.

Thinking about it now, it was pretty ridiculous. What was the point of saving face?

So I shamelessly picked up my niece, who was glued to Chen Shu’s leg.

“You’re supposed to call him Uncle.”

I held her in my arms and gave Chen Shu a dazzling smile.

I had no idea how everyone else felt about that meal, but I, for one, had a great time. I even fed Little Ancestor a few egg dumplings.

When we headed out, everyone started putting on a show again.

Someone “accidentally” pulled out a car key worth millions, while someone else’s husband came to pick her up wearing an expensive watch.

Holding Little Ancestor’s hand, I yawned.

“Is someone coming to pick you up, Xiao Xiao? If not, you can ride with me.”

It was the girl in the black dress again. I had a faint impression of her now-she’d probably been the Chinese class representative back in school.

“Yeah, someone is.”

She seemed not to have expected that answer and froze for a second.

“That’s good. I was thinking if no one was coming, I could drive you home. Do you still live in Xicheng?”

Ten years ago, Xicheng had been a symbol of wealth. Now Beicheng had risen, becoming even more prosperous, so of course I’d moved to Beicheng.

I shook my head and thanked her for the offer.

But as one classmate after another left, eventually only Little Ancestor and I remained at the entrance.

Uncle Gu, our family driver, had gone to pick up my dad, and the taxi driver I’d booked on my phone was stuck halfway here in traffic.

I slowly squatted down, propping my chin in my hands as I waited.

A suit jacket, still carrying a trace of warmth, settled over my shoulders.

I turned around and saw Chen Shu.

“I’ll drive you two back.”

“No need. Someone really is coming to pick me up.”

There was no way I dared get into Chen Shu’s car, so I showed him the ride-hailing page on my phone.

“It was canceled.”

In the end, I still took Little Ancestor by the hand and got into Chen Shu’s car.

Because the taxi driver had been delayed for too long, he canceled the order himself. Left with no choice, I accepted Chen Shu’s ride.

Ten years had passed, but Chen Shu was still the same as ever. If anything, he was even more handsome than before, with sharp brows and bright eyes. One more look at him was still enough to make my heart skip.

Neither of us spoke on the way. In the end, Chen Shu’s car stopped in front of my small single-girl apartment.

“You live here?”

“My ex-husband walked away with nothing and left it to me.”

I said it without thinking, then immediately regretted it and glanced at his expression through the rearview mirror.

Chen Shu, however, was smiling. He asked me in return, “Xiao Xiao, do you know what little habit you have when you lie?”

How would I know what my own little habit was?

But with Chen Shu exposing me like that, my face burned. I thought, Did that mean he’d known I was lying from the very first thing I said at the table?

“Mama.”

The little cub in my arms suddenly called out. She tugged at my collar, her hands and feet wriggling all over the place.

After a great deal of effort, I finally managed to restrain her, and inspiration struck.

“She’s only three. How could she lie?”

“Baby, what did you call me? Say it again?”

I ruffled Little Ancestor’s hair and, deeply satisfied, listened to her call me Mama one more time.

Sorry, sis! I’m borrowing your kid for a little while.

When I looked up again, Chen Shu’s expression had gone cold, as if a layer of frost had settled over it.

At my ten-year high school reunion, I showed up bare-faced, wearing an outfit that cost less than three hundred yuan from head to toe, with a child in my arms.

And the poor boy I had once...
