Chapter 10
My mother looked as if she had aged ten years.
When she saw me, she could no longer hold back her tears. They poured down like rain as she pounded her fists against my chest. “Why, Xin Xin, why? Why didn’t you take care of Xiao Min? How can you call yourself a big sister? Xin Xin, I brought you home, I raised you, I never asked you for anything, I only wanted Xiao Min to live well, for both of you sisters to live…”
“I’m sorry, Mom, I’m sorry.” I repeated it over and over. “It’s my fault, it’s all my fault.”
I grabbed her hand and slapped my own face with her palm, trying to make her feel a little better.
But the more she spoke, the more agitated she became, and her expression grew increasingly pained until she clutched her chest.
I panicked immediately. I had seen this scene many times before: “Mom! Mom, your heart… Mom, where’s your medicine? Where is it?”
I rummaged through her pockets, but all I found was a large bottle of sleeping pills.
In that instant, I understood: “You want to…”
She snatched the bottle from my hand. “After I finish burning paper for Xiao Min, I’ll go take care of her…”
At that moment, we were in the square outside the station exit. I looked around but couldn’t see any first aid station.
If I called an ambulance, the traffic here was congested, and there had been an accident on the road when we arrived, causing a long jam.
As much as I hated to admit it, the only person who could really help me now was Chen Suiyuan.
“Beg me, beg me, Xu Xin.” Not far away, he watched coldly as I pleaded for help.
“I’m begging you, please, Chen Suiyuan, this is a matter of life and death, help me, please help me.” I had no time to argue with him, gripping his sleeve tightly.
“Xu Xin, about that deal I asked you to consider…”
“I agree, I agree.” I nodded repeatedly. “Hurry, please, take my mom to the hospital, quickly.”
He looked at me and said no more, striding quickly toward my mother.
Fortunately, Chen Suiyuan had medication in his car, and then he took my mother to a hospital he had arranged.
While waiting outside the hospital room, I wiped my face and leaned back in my chair, looking up:
“Chen Suiyuan, you really are a disaster. You thought you were just playing with Xiao Min, but look at the result-it was a life. And just now, our family almost had to pay you with a second one.”
“Do you really think Xu Min’s death was all my fault?” Unexpectedly, he asked me back, “It was a mutual relationship. We both enjoyed it, we were both happy. Either of us had the right to end it. So why is it that just because she died, everything is my fault?”
“Chen Suiyuan,” I bit my lower lip, “you really deserve to go to hell.”
He said nothing, shook his head and stood up. After taking a few steps, he turned back, lifted my chin from above and looked down at me. “Xu Xin, I don’t care what you think of me, or whether you hate me. In fact, the more you hate me, the better. All I want is for you to remember what you just promised me.”
“Don’t worry, I won’t go back on my word. Besides, now that even my mother is lying here, what right do I have to regret anything?”
Chen Suiyuan pinched my face, as if reluctant to let go, studying me from side to side. “Good.”
