chapter 16
Chapter 16
When Wu Ai arrived at the bottom of the apartment building, Guo Yi was standing under the streetlight, wearing a light blue dress.
Guo Yi was about 168cm tall, and when Wu Ai looked at her, he always felt as if he was looking down from above.
Their eyes met, and just like the day they broke up more than a month ago, they remained silent for a long time.
Guo Yi lifted her head, her face expressionless except for a flush on her cheeks. “Wu Ai, I’m pregnant.”
“Can you fucking stop making things up?”
Wu Ai couldn’t help cursing, but quickly lowered his voice, afraid of drawing attention from passersby.
“You mess around outside and now you want me to take responsibility?”
“What do you mean?” Guo Yi’s voice turned cold as well, her grip on her bag tightening.
Noticing the strange looks from people nearby, he grabbed Guo Yi’s wrist and pulled her to a more secluded spot.
Guo Yi didn’t resist, letting Wu Ai pull her along, her other hand protectively covering her belly, her fingertips turning white from the force.
Seeing this gesture, Wu Ai grew even angrier.
“How am I supposed to believe you with no proof? Show me the evidence!”
“Wu Ai, since last year I’ve only slept with you. This is your child.”
Wu Ai couldn’t understand this woman’s way of thinking. He didn’t believe Guo Yi was really pregnant, much less that the child was his.
But seeing how determined she looked, it was probably true that she was pregnant-she just wanted him to take responsibility.
If it really was his child, Guo Yi would’ve slapped a diagnosis report in his face long ago.
“I only have two thousand yuan right now. Take the money, get rid of the child, and then get as far away from me as possible!”
Guo Yi bit her lip and, after a while, said, “I don’t want your money. I’m going to have this child.”
“Are you fucking crazy!” Wu Ai shouted. “Can you even afford to raise a kid? Are you going to make him suffer with you?”
“It’s a life, no matter what.”
Guo Yi’s eyes turned red, but she didn’t shed any tears.
“I want him to know he has an irresponsible father.”
Hearing this, Wu Ai felt like his dignity had been insulted.
“Guo Yi, you won’t be satisfied until you ruin me, will you?”
Seeing the tears welling up in Guo Yi’s eyes, his voice softened a bit, tinged with exhaustion.
“You broke up with me right before my Art College Entrance Exam and I survived that. Now the Gaokao is in two months and you pull this. What do you really want?”
“If you don’t want to take responsibility, I won’t force you.”
Guo Yi stared at him, silent for a few seconds, her tone still resolute.
“I just want you to admit it.”
Looking at how determined Guo Yi was, Wu Ai felt this woman was simply unreasonable, but mostly he just felt helpless.
“Guo Yi, stop making a scene,” he said finally, trying to persuade her.
“I’m not making a scene.” Guo Yi wiped the dampness from the corner of her eyes.
“We’ve already broken up. Don’t expect me to acknowledge this bastard you say is mine!”
With that, Wu Ai turned and walked toward the apartment building.
Guo Yi watched him go upstairs and wanted to follow, but the building’s front desk staff stopped her outside.
Wu Ai glanced back-she stood at the entrance, tears streaming down her cheeks.
She opened her mouth, as if she had something to say.
“Take care of yourself…”
Wu Ai’s heart softened for a moment, but then he hardened it again.
She was the one who asked for the breakup, and now she was pulling this. Who knew if it was all a trick.
Thinking of this, he gritted his teeth.
“If you’re getting an abortion, make sure you bring someone with you. Don’t let anything happen.”
With these words, Wu Ai turned and got into the elevator, never looking back again.
When Guo Yi proposed breaking up, it did deal a heavy psychological blow to him, but Wu Ai happened to be the kind of person who only unleashes his potential in desperate situations.
Not only did he improvise a masterpiece like “Goodbye When Snow Falls” during the exam, but he also smoothly secured the national first-place qualification certificate.
As for Zhang Lei?
He thought his score of 78 would be enough, but this year’s exam was like a battle of immortals, and he didn’t even get the qualification certificate.
So Wu Ai always believed that if it weren’t for his strong mental resilience, his future might have been ruined by Guo Yi.
In Wu Ai’s eyes, the future represents the sustainable development of interests. Anyone who dares to affect his future will be hated for life, never forgiven.
In the following days, Guo Yi didn’t show up again, but he did receive an apology message from her.
Guo Yi didn’t mention anything about the pregnancy in the message.
She first congratulated him on achieving the top score nationwide, then told Wu Ai to prepare well for the Gaokao, saying they might never see each other again.
Seeing this apology letter, Wu Ai was even more convinced that Guo Yi was a materialistic woman, so he simply deleted the message and pretended it never happened.
A week passed like this, and Wu Ai finally couldn’t stand the boredom of Online Classes anymore. He grabbed his sneakers and rushed downstairs.
Out of habit, he took out his phone to call Chang Qu out for a game of football, but Chang Qu started complaining to him.
“I can’t get out, Brother Ai. My mom keeps me at home for Online Classes every day. I’m living worse than livestock!”
Since Chang Qu couldn’t come, Wu Ai thought of others.
Shi Xian seemed busy these days, but didn’t say much about what she was busy with-just that it was family matters.
Mu Yunfei was busy with her school’s final exams and didn’t have much time either.
Wu Ai stared intently at his phone screen, his gaze lingering on the only blue avatar for a long time before finally clicking in.
Dongdan Sports Center, one of the most popular football fields in Beijing’s urban area, is always bustling with people every afternoon.
Wu Ai and a few newly acquainted football friends were playing on the field, while a stylishly dressed girl sat on the sidelines.
She had an elegant air, wore sunglasses, and drew the attention of passersby.
But her icy expression kept people at a distance.
Wu Ai sat down beside her, grabbed his water bottle and took a big gulp, immediately attracting a few hostile glances.
The girl looked at Wu Ai’s behavior, her expression growing even colder as she covered her nose.
“You asked me out just to watch you play football? Not gentlemanly at all.”
“I’m not a gentleman-I’m a slacker.”
Wu Ai ignored her and lit a cigarette for himself.
“But the slacker saved your life last time. Pretty ironic, isn’t it?”
Liu Nanyu raised her eyebrows, her icy face finally showing a hint of relaxation.
“That’s true.”
She paused, then asked, “How much longer are you going to play? You can’t expect me to sit here forever, right?”
“I’ll take you to Wangfujing later. There’s good food over there.”
Just as Wu Ai was about to get up, a chubby guy walked over and stopped in front of him.
“Hi, I’m Liang Tianhang. Can I talk to you about something?”
He was the same age as Wu Ai, mainly played as a defensive midfielder, and was pretty decent at football-fairly average overall.
Wu Ai immediately reached out and shook his hand.
“If you want the WeChat of the beautiful lady next to me, forget it.”
