Chapter 4
Chapter 4
To be honest, Bai Ningjin was my first love.
Back in college, Bai Ningjin was the upperclassman in charge of welcoming the new students.
He was nothing like Shen Yunxing. Since we were children, Shen Yunxing had always been the golden child my elders used as a benchmark to compare against me.
The two of us had once gotten into a massive fight over who would play the dad and who would play the mom during a game of house, and we’d been sworn enemies ever since.
To make matters worse, our growth trajectories almost completely overlapped; we couldn’t go anywhere without running into each other.
We had to compete over everything.
If I studied piano, he’d buy a Steinway.
If I took up riding, he’d sign up for an equestrian class too.
I swore I never wanted to cross paths with that idiot ever again.
When it came time to apply for college, I made a point of declaring, “I’m going to A University.”
He gave a cold snort. “Then I’m going to B University.”
In the end, the two of us stood at the gates of A University, staring at each other in stunned silence.
I told him he was like a ghost that refused to move on.
He said, “Sorry, I only ended up here because I missed the cutoff for my first choice.”
“Get lost. The entry score for A University is higher than B University. What do you mean you ‘missed the cutoff’?”
Once on campus, we went our separate ways.
I was quickly swallowed by the surging crowd. Aimless, I turned back to look. Shen Yunxing’s height and looks made him stand out like a crane among a flock of chickens.
I opened my mouth, wanting to call out to him, but a beautiful Omega with a blushing face rushed up to him, shyly and nervously asking for his WeChat.
He lowered his gaze. The sun was just right, tinting his eyes with a golden glow.
The words froze in my throat. I turned away, never finding out if he gave out his WeChat that day or not.
And that was when I met Bai Ningjin.
He gave me a gentle smile and asked, “Junior, what’s your major? Which class are you in?”
He was the complete opposite of Shen Yunxing.
I confessed to him after a club team-building event.
We had gone to an amusement park, and I said, “Senior, let’s have an archery contest.”
There were many small plushies being given away as prizes for archery that day.
I told him, “There’s no way you’ll win more than me.”
As night fell, people seemed to become gentler and more indulgent.
The night breeze brushed through his hair as he gave a faint smile. “You’ll definitely be the one who wins in the end.”
“Because these little plushies surely want to go home with the handsome guy.”
I was stunned. I hadn’t realized someone could give up so easily, simply because I wanted to win.
That night, I confessed, and he nodded.
Bai Ningjin was a very good boyfriend.
He would buy me breakfast and prepare gifts for every date.
Even when his studies were incredibly hectic and he had to spend every day in the lab, he would always find time to arrange surprises for me.
If not for what happened later…
Perhaps Shen Yunxing and I would never have ended up together.
Thinking of this, I couldn’t help but look at his profile.
My silence was taken as tacit agreement.
Shen Yunxing looked at me for a moment before lowering his eyes. After a long pause, he gave a low murmur of acknowledgment. “I see.”
I was used to seeing him high-spirited, wild, and untamable.
Seeing him now, looking like a mistreated punching bag or a wronged little wife, made my heart soften slightly.
“Um, actually, you…”
“I know. I have no official status, so how would I dare to be jealous?”
“I’m the ‘other man,’ I know my place.” He tilted his head at a stubborn forty-five-degree angle, gazing at the sky with a melancholy expression.
