Chapter 5
Chapter 5
I woke up at five o’clock. The sky was just beginning to brighten. I thought Wei Yan had gone back to the guest room to sleep, but when I opened the door, I ran right into someone.
Had he slept by the door all night?
“You’re up way too early, wife.”
He squinted at me. I wasn’t in the mood for any of his nonsense, so I stepped over him to go wash up.
He grabbed my ankle. I lost my balance and was pulled into his arms.
The scent of tobacco was faint, but his chest was burning hot.
“Still angry, hmm?”
I tried to struggle, but he wouldn’t let go. It wasn’t until I called out his name that he finally released me.
He stood up unsteadily, looking down at me with lowered eyelids.
Everything seemed hazy in the early morning light. His shadow loomed over me, and his voice held a dry, raspy quality.
“I know you don’t want to hear about our past, but there’s no longer any possibility between her and me,” he said.
“So don’t be afraid that I’ll leave, okay?” He leaned in close to my ear, almost pulling me into a hug.
I admit, my heart softened. In the end, I let him lead me to the bathroom by the hand, where he squeezed out the toothpaste and held the toothbrush to my lips.
“Do you want me to brush them for you?” he teased.
I snatched the toothbrush from him, and soon, white foam filled my mouth.
I watched him in the mirror. His eyes were clear and bright; he always had the features of a youthful boy. When he noticed me looking, he leaned down and kissed my neck.

The tattoo on the back of Wei Yan’s neck was the initials of his ex-girlfriend’s name.
The only reason he had spared me a second glance in that vast sea of people was because my...
