My family isn’t well-off, so my mom doesn’t allow me to turn on the air conditioning during the day.

Summer in City A is sweltering, with peak temperatures soaring to 38 degrees Celsius.

Left with no other choice, I’ve been heading to the park every day to seek relief from the heat.

After the fifth time I ran into the aloof top student, Shi Jianjin, as he cycled past and our eyes met, he was the first to speak.

“Hey, classmate, are you from our school?”

Dude, that’s a bit presumptuous of you.

We’ve been in the same class for a whole year.

“Class Monitor, we’re in the same class. My name is Mengtang,” I replied in a small voice, my introverted nature showing.

“I have face blindness; I can’t remember people. What are you doing here?”

“Seeking relief from the heat.”

Shi Jianjin fell silent for a few seconds after hearing my answer before slowly speaking up. “If you keep ‘seeking relief’ like this, you’re going to get heatstroke. It’s nearly forty degrees out.”

“My family… doesn’t allow me to turn on the AC.”

My face flushed slightly.

My insecurities and sensitivity almost robbed me of my voice.

As I said this, I saw Shi Jianjin’s eyes light up. He seemed… happy?

Was it a sense of superiority because I’m poor?

I felt a bit unhappy.

“Then come to my house. My AC is on twenty-four hours a day.”
