Chapter 6

After taking the painkillers, I lay in bed.

I thought about everything that had happened that day.

It all felt so surreal and dreamlike that I expected to have trouble sleeping. However, as my thoughts drifted, I eventually fell asleep.

And for once, it was a dreamless night.

Early the next morning, the doorbell woke me up.

I opened the door to find Lin Rou standing respectfully by the entrance. “Miss Wen, President Song asked me to give this to you.”

As she spoke, she handed me an insulated bag.

“What is it?” I asked, curious. We were already divorced; what could he possibly be sending me?

“President Song gave it to me himself. As for what’s inside, you’ll find out once you open it, Miss Wen.”

“Thank you.”

After seeing Lin Rou off, I immediately opened the bag.

Inside were several packs of traditional Chinese medicine ready to be brewed, a box of chocolates, and a thermos.

I unscrewed the lid of the thermos, and the thick scent of herbal medicine wafted out.

I had spent over half a year drinking this specific concoction, so I knew exactly what it was for. Even though it tasted terrible, I pinched my nose and forced it down.

Once I finished the medicine, I rinsed my mouth and popped a chocolate into my mouth.

Only after the bitterness had completely faded did it occur to me that I needed to demand an explanation from Song Zhiyuan.

What was he playing at with all these stunts?

First, he made a scene about wanting a divorce, then he went around looking for mistresses, and now he was sending medicine to his ex-wife.

What did he want?!

Was he trying to have his cake and eat it too?

Or was he trying to keep one foot in nine different boats? Wasn’t he afraid the boats would drift apart and he’d drown?

Just as I picked up my phone to call Song Zhiyuan, Song Mei suddenly sent me a voice call request.

I accepted without a second thought.

“Sister-in-law, something huge happened!”

“Ex-sister-in-law,” I corrected her.

“My brother got beaten up by Zhou Jin!” Song Mei completely ignored my correction, her voice filled with indignation.

I repeated her words in disbelief. “Your brother was beaten by Zhou Jin? Which Zhou Jin?”

“Your fifth ex-boyfriend! He showed up at our door out of nowhere to pick a fight with my brother. My brother’s face is all swollen!” The more Song Mei spoke, the angrier she got, her voice rising in pitch.

I felt like the world had gone a little crazy.

Why on earth would Zhou Jin hit Song Zhiyuan?

It couldn’t be because of last night… Did he misunderstand and think I got divorced because Song Zhiyuan was seeing someone else?

Filled with doubt and concern, I went to the Song residence.

Song Mei and Father Song had already gone to work, leaving only Mother Song and Song Zhiyuan at home.

Song Zhiyuan showed no expression when he saw me.

Mother Song, however, was incredibly warm. She took my hand and apologized profusely, saying her son had a hole in his brain for letting me down.

Song Zhiyuan sat on the sofa, holding an ice pack to his face while flipping through TV channels.

I carefully observed his injuries; they weren’t very serious. But knowing he had been hit by Zhou Jin made me feel a lingering sense of guilt.

Sensing my thoughts, Mother Song patted my hand. “Don’t take it to heart. It’s normal for men to get into scuffles.”

“Heh.”

As soon as Mother Song finished speaking, Song Zhiyuan let out a scoffing sound.

It made things quite awkward for both Mother Song and me.

Song Zhiyuan turned off the TV, tilted his head, and looked at me with a sneer. “Only the incompetent resort to using their fists.”

“I’ll come back another day.” Seeing him like this, I figured he probably only got hit because he had a big mouth. It likely had nothing to do with me.

I stood up to leave. Mother Song looked like she wanted to urge me to stay, but she hesitated.

Seeing this, Song Zhiyuan stood up on his own. “Mom, I’ll walk her out.”

“That’s wonderful!” Seeing Song Zhiyuan take the initiative to see me off, Mother Song excitedly patted his arm and instructed, “Son, you must make sure Xiao Shu gets home safely.”

“Mhm.”
