Chapter 4

“Pretentious,” Song Zhiyuan mocked.

I didn’t argue back.

This wasn’t the first time he’d called me that. I had long since become immune to his sharp tongue.

I turned my head, looking at the people coming and going in the front hall. Everyone here was glamorous and sophisticated; pick any one of them at random, and they would be the elite of the elite.

And yet, even so, you could still pick Zhou Jin out from the crowd with a single glance.

There are always some people in this world who become the center of attention no matter where they go. Zhou Jin was that kind of presence.

If you have ever been loved by someone so dazzling and brilliant, it becomes very difficult to fall in love with anyone else for the rest of your life.

Like me. I had once tried with all my might to fall for other men, but I still failed. Simply because none of them were Zhou Jin.

After the banquet ended, I was preparing to call a car through an app. Ye Wanxin passed by and nudged Zhou Jin’s waist. “Miss Wen didn’t drive here. Ah Jin, why don’t you give her a ride?”

Hearing this, I looked at her in disbelief.

What kind of woman could be so generous that she would proactively ask her fiancé to drive his ex-girlfriend home?

I shifted my gaze to Zhou Jin beside her. He looked at me with a face full of smiles, dangling his car keys. “Let’s go. I’ll take you.”

“No need, I’ll call a car myself.” Since he already had a fiancée, I naturally refused to get into his car.

Seeing my refusal, Ye Wanxin advised me thoughtfully, “Miss Wen, don’t feel any psychological burden. Ah Jin knows his boundaries. He’s told me all about your past, and I’m not the type to get jealous over nothing. It’s so late now; it’s not safe for a girl to take a taxi alone.”

After saying that, Ye Wanxin looked up at Zhou Jin and said coquettishly, “Ah Jin, don’t you agree?”

“Mm.” The look in Zhou Jin’s eyes as he watched her was as gentle as water.

“Ah Jin, go ahead and drop off your first love first. I’ll have my brother drive me home.” After saying that, Ye Wanxin vanished before I could respond.

With his back to her, Zhou Jin waved a hand and walked over to my side.

I instinctively took a step back.

He chuckled softly. “What are you afraid of? I don’t bite.”

“Who said I was afraid?” I puffed out my chest defiantly.

Zhou Jin didn’t say anything, his gaze complex as he shook his car keys and headed toward the parking lot. I hesitated for a moment but followed him anyway.

It was just a ride home, wasn’t it?! If his fiancée didn’t care, why should I be so worked up about it?

In the parking lot, just as I sat down in Zhou Jin’s car, I saw Song Zhiyuan. In his passenger seat, there was actually a woman.

I rubbed my eyes, unable to believe it. He actually found No. 8?

I really wanted to see what kind of woman was brave enough to be Song Zhiyuan’s lover!

Before I could finish being surprised, Zhou Jin suddenly stepped on the gas, and the car sped out in an instant.

Once out of the parking lot, I gave Zhou Jin my address. When we reached the downstairs of my apartment complex, Zhou Jin parked the car.

As I lowered my head to unbuckle my seatbelt, Zhou Jin suddenly shoved an invitation into my hand.

“Next Friday. My engagement.”

“Oh.” I took the invitation, a dull ache throbbing in my chest. I couldn’t quite describe the feeling.

I ran all the way into the complex, and the sound of the engine starting didn’t come from behind me for a long time. But I didn’t have the courage to look back at all.

When I got home, I didn’t even turn on the lights. I just slumped onto the floor with my back against the door.

The invitation Zhou Jin had shoved at me was clutched tightly in my hand, creating irreversible creases.

It wasn’t until Ji Ting called that I slowly regained my senses.

“Xiao Shu, I heard Zhou Jin went to the Lu family banquet too. Did you see each other?”

“We did.”

“He didn’t say anything, did he?” Ji Ting asked worriedly.

“He gave me an invitation. He’s getting engaged next Friday.” To the eldest daughter of the Ye Family, that understanding Ye Wanxin.

“Sigh!”

Ji Ting let out a sigh. “He’s different from us.”

“I know.”
