After returning from that hotpot dinner, I unpinned Shen Chen’s chat with swollen eyes and set his messages to “Do Not Disturb.” Yet, I still couldn’t stop myself from checking WeChat over and over again to see if he had messaged me.

Nothing.

There was only a single friend request from Shen Heguang:

“Sister Weiwei, it’s Shen Heguang.”

Thinking back, it had been a long time since I’d seen Shen Heguang. I had attended a parent-teacher meeting for him once back in high school, but we hadn’t had any contact since then.

Now that he had gotten into Jiang University, I suppose we were alumni.

It was in the middle of the night when I finally received a message from Shen Chen:

“About looking at wedding dresses… if you’re busy, you can just skip it.”

I glanced at the time. It was 12:30 AM. Su Yue must have fallen asleep by now, which was why Shen Chen was messaging me.

I felt a strange, complicated mix of emotions as I replied:

“It’s fine. I wish you both a happy marriage.”

I saw that Shen Chen was typing for a long time. Finally, he sent a single sentence:

“Weiwei, can our relationship stay the same as it was before?”

The same as before?

You already have Su Yue, yet you want me to keep liking you? To keep being as good to you as I was before?

“I wish you and Su Yue happiness.”

Shen Chen, how can you be so greedy?

Shen Chen remained silent for a long time on the other end, ultimately never replying.

The next day at work, during my lunch break, Shen Chen called me.

“Weiwei, Su Yue had my phone yesterday. She didn’t say anything to you, did she?”

I froze for a moment, realization dawning on me.

“No, I didn’t see any messages.”

“She’s been feeling insecure since she just got back. Yesterday, she questioned every female friend on my WeChat, and today at work, the people in the office questioned me again. It’s really embarrassing.”

Shen Chen worked at his father’s company. To prove himself, he had started as a low-level employee. He had indeed become more steady over the past two years.

“You were like that back in school, too. You can’t blame her,” I echoed with a light laugh.

Shen Chen fell silent on the other end for a moment before suddenly whispering:

“But Weiwei, you would never act like that.”

You would never act like that.

Shen Chen, you have no idea. I *was* jealous.

But I didn’t have a status like Su Yue’s that would allow me to throw a fit rightfully, so you never knew.

“Well… if there’s nothing else, I’m hanging up.”

I wasn’t sure if it was just my imagination, but it felt like Shen Chen wanted to say something else to me.

But I had already ended the call.
