Chapter 9
Chapter 9
Guilt washed over me like a tide, making it hard to breathe.
Nothing out of the ordinary had happened at the wedding; everything had been calm and peaceful. Could it be that the person trying to harm me was actually at the venue?
My top priority now was to identify the source of the danger.
The first person I suspected was my Stepfather.
He had a gambling addiction. Ever since Weizhi and I started dating, his harassment had only intensified. Before the wedding, he had asked to borrow three hundred thousand yuan.
When I flatly refused, he flew into a rage, arrogantly threatening to ruin me. “I raised you all these years, and now that you think you’re some phoenix climbing onto a high branch, you want to cast us aside? Not a chance! If you don’t give me the money, I’ll make sure this wedding never happens!”
He hadn’t shown up on the day of the wedding.
I immediately headed home to find him.
The moment my mother saw me, she began cursing. “You still have the nerve to show your face here? Do you have any idea how awful Gu Weizhi’s expression was yesterday? You’re about to drive away a perfect catch of a husband! Tell me the truth-do you have another man on the side?”
Suppressing my anger, I searched every inch of the house. “Where is Uncle Chen?”
My mother raised her voice, sounding annoyed. “Where else would he be? He went out of town on a business trip to pick up some stock!”
“Is that so?” I narrowed my eyes, my gaze landing on a bowl of partially shelled peanuts on the dining table. I let out a cold, mocking laugh. “The three of us are allergic to these. Uncle Chen is the only one who likes them. Who are you shelling those for?”
My mother’s eyes darted around guiltily.
It was him! I didn’t waste any more words. “Fine. If you won’t talk, I’m calling the police. I still have the evidence from the last time Uncle Chen broke into my apartment to steal things. It’s more than enough to land him in prison.”
“No, no, no!” Panic finally set in, and she stammered out that my Stepfather had fallen into debt again.
“He said he was going to make a scene at the wedding. I couldn’t let that happen-we can’t ask for money until after you’ve married into the Gu Family. So I… I tricked your Uncle Chen into going to the warehouse and locked him inside. Who knew you’d be such a useless disappointment!”
I had known since I was a child that she was mercenary and greedy, but why did my heart still ache with such sharp, tearing resentment at this moment?
I checked the surveillance footage. On the day of the wedding, my Stepfather had indeed been locked away.
If it wasn’t him, then who was it?
As I was leaving, feeling utterly lost, my mother suddenly grabbed my arm.
“You need to be careful of your Best Friend. There’s something wrong with her!”

Three Brocade Pouches
Before my grandmother passed away, she left me three brocade pouches.
“On the seventh day after my death, give these to the seventh person who offers incense.”
