Chapter 16
Chapter 16
Was I overthinking?
But if this turned out to be another misunderstanding, the relationship we had just managed to repair would truly be beyond saving.
To be safe, I had to leave myself a way out.
I reached for my phone, only to realize it wasn’t there. Then I remembered it had run out of battery on the way here and had been with Gu Weizhi ever since.
I took a deep breath and asked with a smile if I could have it back since it should be mostly charged by now. Gu Weizhi was standing a short distance away; he didn’t even turn his head. “I’ll keep it for you. Didn’t the doctor say your eye pressure is a bit high and you should use your phone less? Get some rest and stop worrying about these things.”
A vein in my temple throbbed. “I’m just worried my boss might have something urgent for me.”
“How could they? I helped you apply for marriage leave. Even your boss can’t do anything about that.”
I pressed my lips together tightly. Seeing my displeasure, Gu Xun’an pulled me into an embrace, acting spoiled in a half-serious way.
“Are you blaming me for taking the initiative? I just don’t want anyone to disturb us. I’m always afraid you’ll leave without saying goodbye like last time. I only feel at ease when the phone is with me.”
He lowered his head to kiss me.
Our skin touched in an intimate, lingering moment, but what welled up in my heart was no longer sweetness.
It was a deep, chilling fear.
I didn’t ask for the phone again. Instead, I turned to check the stove. When I came back out, I feigned a complaint. “Weizhi, the stove won’t light. I need to ask my mom for the number of the gas delivery shop, otherwise there won’t be hot water for a shower tonight.”
I had to be indirect. I needed to get the phone in my hands first.
Gu Weizhi was a neat freak and had a habit of showering every day. I said with a troubled expression, “Actually, it’s fine to skip a day. You’ll just have to suffer through it tonight, and we can go find a shop in the village tomorrow morning.”
The village roads were muddy and difficult to navigate; driving out would be a major hassle.
Gu Weizhi glanced at the sky and handed the phone to me.
My heart hammered against my ribs like a drum. I said “hello” several times, using the excuse of a poor signal to walk outside. Just as the call connected, I saw Gu Weizhi following me out of the corner of my eye.
He snatched the phone right out of my hand.
My heart sank instantly.

Three Brocade Pouches
Before my grandmother passed away, she left me three brocade pouches.
“On the seventh day after my death, give these to the seventh person who offers incense.”
