Chapter 6
Chapter 6
It was the weekend, and I was having breakfast at my parents’ place. My father had taken Yangyang out to play.
Knowing I was scheduled to meet Liang Xu later, my mother called Xiao Musheng.
“Let Xiao Xiao go with you. Liang Xu found himself a younger woman; you can’t let him win!”
I sighed, trying to get my mother to face reality.
“He’s just being polite to save your face. How could he possibly be interested in a middle-aged woman with a child?”
“It doesn’t hurt to ask. Maybe he likes the mature type.”
With just one phone call, she actually managed to get Xiao Musheng to come over.
“I’m ten years older than you. Are you sure you want to pursue a romantic relationship with me?” I asked calmly.
Purely physical attraction had a way of crudely and abruptly shattering any sense of distance. The lake of my heart, stagnant for years, was indeed beginning to ripple.
But I wasn’t some naive young girl. My profession made me suspicious by nature.
“I’m a law-abiding citizen. I might have been young and ignorant once, straying onto the wrong path, but I turned over a new leaf long ago.
“Officer Jiang, you’re exactly my type. It’s not like I’m asking you to marry me right this second, so why not give it a try?”
Xiao Musheng’s eyes burned with intensity.
His confession, however, only made me frown.
“You don’t have any… diseases, do you?”
He smiled faintly.
“We can go to the hospital right now. I’ll do a full physical, including a complete infectious disease panel.”
“Well, there’s no rush for that. Just take me home first,” I said, turning my gaze toward the window.
“Still in a bad mood?” Xiao Musheng asked as he started the car, not waiting for my reply. “Do you prefer tripe or duck intestines?”
“Tripe,” I answered instinctively.
“Beef or mutton?”
“Beef.”
“Great. I’m taking you out for hot pot. There’s nothing a good hot pot can’t fix. If one meal doesn’t do it, then we’ll have two.”
Infected by his easygoing nature, the gloom weighing on my chest seemed to lift slightly.
“Just two?”
“If Officer Jiang agrees to be my girlfriend, you can have as many as you want.”
“Oh? What if I want you to give me the whole restaurant?”
“No problem!”
He agreed so readily that I turned to look at him, my brow furrowed.
“Really?”
“Should we go print out a gift contract right now?”
My frown deepened as I looked him up and down with the scrutinizing gaze I usually reserved for suspects.
“You aren’t buried in massive debt, are you?”
“Want to see my personal credit report and bank balance?”
Xiao Musheng slammed on the brakes and pulled over to the curb.
I immediately agreed. “Yes. Pull them up and let me see.”
Five minutes later.
“Fine, let’s give it a try.
“But let’s be clear: we’re just trying it out. You aren’t allowed to make any intimate moves without my permission.”
“And what if Officer Jiang makes an intimate move on me? Can I resist?”
I replied decisively, “No, you cannot.”
