Chapter 4

As I walked out of the residential complex, the door of a black Land Rover parked by the curb opened.

Xiao Musheng stepped out and took my suitcase from me.

I got into the car, but he didn’t start the engine right away.

“Seatbelt.”

Realizing my oversight at his reminder, I turned and fumbled around for a moment, but I couldn’t find the buckle.

So, when Xiao Musheng leaned over, I assumed he was going to help me fasten it.

Caught completely off guard, I felt the man’s soft, warm lips press against mine.

It was a brief touch, over as soon as it began.

“My apologies.”

Though he offered an apology, there wasn’t a hint of remorse in his eyes. Instead, his lips curled into a faint, playful smile.

“If I didn’t do that, I really wouldn’t know how to pull Officer Jiang’s attention away from her ex-husband and onto me.”

I met his words with silence.

A second later, I grabbed him by the collar and kissed him back with force.

He was right. Out with the old, in with the new.

Over a month ago, Liang Xu had asked for a divorce.

He had caught me completely unprepared; I suddenly felt like I couldn’t breathe, my chest tightening with a suffocating pressure.

“What if I don’t want a divorce?”

Liang Xu looked composed, having clearly prepared himself for any reaction I might have.

“Then I’ll just have to move from emotional wandering to a physical affair.

“Jiang Ning, you should know better than anyone that cheating isn’t a crime.”

That sentence of his effectively hammered the final nail into the coffin of our marriage.

We had been married for eight years.

As a husband and a father, Liang Xu had been beyond reproach.

I found it impossible to accept that he could really discard me and our relationship so easily.

But reality slapped me hard in the face.

I had just returned to the place that was once our home.

The house I had decorated with my own two hands had long since been transformed.

His new girlfriend couldn’t wait to erase every trace of the existence of me and my child.

The curtains, the carpets.

Including all the furniture.

Even the interior design style had been completely overhauled.

At thirty-five, I experienced a cliff-drop divorce.

In truth, it wasn’t entirely without warning.
