When my parents found out that Liang Xu had asked for a divorce, they took the news even more calmly than I did.

“Ever since that boy changed careers, I knew he wouldn’t stay settled for long,” my mother remarked, sounding quite proud of her foresight.

“Exactly. The kid always put on too much of an act. I didn’t like him from the start,” my father chimed in immediately, backing up his wife.

“Who gets custody of Yangyang?”

“Liang Xu said he’d give it to me.”

My mother let out a cold laugh. “So he’s planning on a total replacement-new wife, new kid, the whole lot.”

“Child support is fifteen thousand a month.”

Upon hearing this, the tension in my mother’s face smoothed out.

“In that case, leave Yangyang with me. I’ll help you raise him for now; you just need to give me eight thousand.”

“Mom, Yangyang is my son,” I protested, disagreeing with her logic.

Frustrated by my lack of resolve, my mother slapped me on the back.

“Are you stupid? Before, he could at least share the burden. Now you’re raising a child alone while trying to work.

“He’ll be out there living his best life, carefree and single, while you’re stuck juggling a job and a kid. If he ever gets bored of playing around and comes crawling back for a remarriage, the kid will be grown, and you’ll have spent your best years staying ‘pure’ for him.

“‘A prodigal son’s return is worth more than gold’? He wishes!

“If he’s looking for someone new, you should too. You’re young-go out and date!”

I found myself swayed by my mother’s logic.

She was right. If Liang Xu asked for a remarriage in the future, I might actually have agreed.

As I got older, the number of men my age who were even remotely tolerable seemed to dwindle.

Liang Xu was Yangyang’s biological father.

He was handsome and had a prestigious career.

He didn’t smoke or drink, and he was a generous, considerate gentleman.

As a police officer responsible for public security, I had responded to countless calls.

I had seen men who gambled, drank, cheated, and beat their wives-men who even ran off and left behind a mountain of debt.

Compared to them, Liang Xu really was a good man.

He also had one major redeeming quality.

Honesty.

“Jiang Ning, the only constant in this world is change itself.

“At our wedding, my vow to spend the rest of my life with you was sincere.

“But my feelings for someone else now are also real. I don’t want to deceive or betray you, so let’s get a divorce.”
