Chapter 3
Chapter 3
It had been three days since I returned from Paris.
During those three days, I hadn’t had any contact with Li Xiuyi.
However, people in our social circle were constantly reporting his movements to me.
For instance, the woman he claimed he was going to marry had already been sent away.
Another report said he was spending every day soaking himself in bars, to the point that the old man of his family had threatened to kick him out.
And then there was the car I’d given to Young Master Zhou-Li Xiuyi had bought it back for double the price.
What surprised me even more was seeing Li Xiuyi himself after I got off the plane.
Even behind his sunglasses, he couldn’t hide the pallor of his face.
He said, “My father told me to pick you up. You’re having dinner at our house.”
“Sorry,” I replied. “I have other things to attend to, so I can’t make it. I’ll call Director Li personally to apologize.”
Li Xiuyi stared at me.
After a moment, he turned to leave.
He left behind only a cold, “Suit yourself.”
I didn’t let it bother me and drove straight home.
I wasn’t just brushing him off.
I actually did have things to do.
My grandfather had called me and told me to come home for dinner.
He said it was for a meal, but in reality, I was just going back to be lectured.
“I heard you and Xiuyi had a falling out?”
He was giving me an out, a way to back down gracefully.
But I didn’t take it.
“Grandfather, I want to break off the engagement with the Li Family.”
Grandfather’s face darkened.
“I’ll allow you to have your temper-after all, our Song Family isn’t one to be bullied. But I never agreed to let you break the engagement.”
“Grandfather, I want to break the engagement.”
Grandfather slammed his hand on the table.
“Kneel.”
I followed his command smoothly and knelt before him.
“Do you have any idea how much we would lose by breaking ties with the Li Family?”
Of course I knew.
It had been six years since our engagement.
In those six years, our cooperation with the Li Family had become seamless.
While it wasn’t quite a case of “if one prospers, both prosper; if one falls, both fall,” separating our interests would at least cost us a layer of skin.
“What if I can recover those losses?”
Grandfather calmed down.
His fingers tapped lightly on the table.
“Then we’ll talk after you’ve recovered them.”
And so, after leaving the old family manor, I sent a message to my rival.
[President Lu, do you want a wife?]
