Chapter 5
Chapter 5
“Don’t you think there’s something wrong with him? I’m pregnant, and he has absolutely no reaction, yet that child takes one little tumble and he’s worried sick.
“Given how he’s acting, he expects me to believe the kid isn’t his? Would you believe it?
“I really don’t know what he’s thinking. Even if he’s being kind-hearted, even if he wants to help, he doesn’t have to raise her himself. There are a thousand other ways to handle this, yet he insists on the one option that’s the hardest to accept. What on earth is he trying to do?
“Does he just want to call it quits? If he’s done with us, then we’re done! We’ll get a divorce!”
Unable to bring myself to tell my parents, I had no choice but to go to my best friend’s place.
Once I was there, I finally lost control of my emotions and began to vent with righteous indignation.
My friend tried to comfort me, saying, “Calm down, don’t get so worked up. Don’t you think you’re overreacting a bit?”
Hearing this, my hand froze as I reached for my water glass.
I didn’t want to overreact either, but Bai Yan’s behavior was just too much.
There was his blatant resistance to my suggestions, his complete indifference when he heard I was pregnant, and finally, the way he didn’t even look up when I left.
Because of Bai Ranran’s appearance, Bai Yan’s attitude toward me had done a complete 180-degree turn. It was unprecedented.
I couldn’t shake the feeling that he was hiding something from me.
I told my friend, “You don’t understand.”
She sighed. “Have you considered just accepting the child? After all, you two can afford it.”
I shook my head decisively. “That child hates me. There’s no reason for me to invite that kind of trouble into my life.”
I recalled the look in the girl’s eyes when she first saw me-loathing, hostility. It was not a look that could ever inspire affection.
I didn’t know why that child harbored such strong feelings toward me.
But I did know that I couldn’t accept her.
With a mind full of racing thoughts, I didn’t sleep well that night.
The next day, Bai Yan came to find me.
I pulled out my phone to check the time. “I’m going to be late.”
Bai Yan said, “I’ll drive you.”
I didn’t refuse. I got into the car, and just as we were pulling out of the residential complex, Bai Yan couldn’t help but speak up.
He said, “Ranran is introverted, timid, and weak. Xia Zhihuai entrusted her to me on her deathbed; I can’t just ignore her. A child’s biological family environment affects them for a lifetime.
“Youyou, don’t jump to conclusions. Why don’t you try spending some time with her first, okay?”
I let out a long, heavy sigh.
“Bai Yan, have you already forgotten what I told you yesterday?”
Bai Yan blinked, his face a mask of total confusion.
I felt a sharp sting at his reaction.
“Stop the car.”
“Youyou.”
“I said, stop the car!”
Seeing my determination, Bai Yan pulled over to the curb.
I opened the door, stepped out, and slammed it shut with a heavy thud.
I took a few quick steps forward, then abruptly stopped, turned around, and walked back.
Leaning toward the car window, I said to Bai Yan, “I’m pregnant. I told you yesterday. But from yesterday until now, you haven’t said a single word of concern. Is the baby okay? How far along am I? Is there anything I should be careful about?
“Do you not care at all?
“Bai Yan, you’ve truly disappointed me.
“I’m laying it all out right now. If you want to adopt this child, fine-but we’re getting a divorce.”
