I don’t know how much time passed before I received a voice message from my best friend. She told me she had already heard about what just happened.
Even through the screen, I could feel the deep guilt in her voice.
It took me a few seconds to piece it together.
Back then, she and I had gone hiking. We couldn’t catch a taxi on the way back, so she called her brother to pick us up. She came from a blended family, and her brother had been living abroad for years; he had only just returned to the country at the time, so I had never met him.
When she couldn’t get through to him, she had no other choice but to call a friend who happened to be nearby for business-Song Huai.

I didn’t have the energy to dwell on who she meant by “we.” I splashed some water on my face and stood up, preparing to leave.
As I turned around, I realized Chen Jia had come out at some point as well.
She stood behind Song Huai, watching me quietly. The pity in her eyes was unmistakable.
Underneath it, there was also a faint, barely perceptible trace of mockery and contempt.
